WWTBAM Bored

Well my 2001 5-speed manual Suzuki Esteem has both of its catalytic converters clogged and it would cost around $1800 to replace them. I bought the car around 3 1/2 years ago for $4500 and haven't had to put a lot of money into it - around 1K. It got good milage > 30 mpg but I don't think it is worth repairing. I'm looking for a reliable, late model car that isn't to expensive.

Does anyone here have any suggestions as to what they are happy with or what I should avoid?

I like my Saturn Aura. You can get the 4 cylinder for under $20K.

Plus, there are hybrid versions of both the Aura and the Vue, so if you are willing to spend a little extra up front, you'll get better fuel economy.

I like my Saturn Ion, especially for its plastic body panels; you can throw all the road salt you want on it and it won't rust.



Do you worry about that much, down in Texas?

Toyota Corolla. 2009 LE goes for under $19,000 with good options included, and I get better than its claimed highway mileage. Currently a 0% interest deal for 36 months, still low interest for longer terms.

Even used ones are good. We gave up the 2001 mainly because it had been in a major accident (former BF of BD's; just the car got hurt, fortunately) and some of the aftereffects were showing. Not a fancy or sporty car, but reliable.

It's his refuge when the family gets to be too much. No room for anyone else inside. He goes in, locks the doors, tilts the seat back all the way and listens to soothing music.

I love, love, love my Acura. It meets 2 of your criteria...but on the not too expensive one...well.....
