Something Non Political

#1 Post by PlacentiaSoccerMom » Tue Nov 04, 2008 10:15 pm

Maddie got her costume for Romeo and Juliet today.

All of the girls in the party scene got Renaissance Princess costumes.

Maddie got a slutty maid costume.

Basically she was told that she was the only one cute and tiny enough to fit into the costume, so she they want her to wear it.

I don't know how I feel about my fifteen year old daughter being objectified that way, but I am pretty sure that I am not happy about it.

How does she feel about it?

She isn't happy.

It's just one more thing in a long list of indignities being heaped upon her in Drama.

She wishes she could go back in time and take Chemistry instead.

IMNSHO, she's better waiting to take Chemistry. There's a whole lot of math in it.

Well, she's advanced in math, taking Honors Trig Analysis this year and Calculus next year. Because of funding cut backs, she couldn't take as many classes and she wanted.

Both of my girls are good in math. Emma is taking Honors Algebra as a 7th grader this year.

It's not necessary for the school to offer a class for her to take it. The Little Guy is presently learning sixth grade math. Even though his school is a highly gifted elementary magnet, it doesn't offer sixth grade math. --Bob

Oh sorry. I thought you had said she didn't like math. Maybe I assumed that meant she wasn't doing well.

I would have loved to have taken Chemistry when I was her age. I was teaching myself starting about age 12. My high school was too small to have advanced anything and they didn't let people go off track. You took two out of the three science courses, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, in your Junior and Senior years - period. I really wish I had taken Biology.

She's an actress, PSM, and it's just a role.

Unless you have an objection to a slutty maid character appearing in any high school play.

I don't have to say anything.

Thanks, marley

I do think it's part of life....things happening that aren't always your
first choice. I know she will do well in her role, and that's what it is, and she will
gain something from going through this.

Perhaps she could have Emma give the Drama coach a stern talking to.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I have a problem with the fact that the other "maids" do not have to wear slutty costumes. They are being given princess costumes.

I think it's okay for you to be upset about this!!! 1) it's your daughter and 2) there is no need for one maid to be different from the others, especially if that's not what she wants. Maybe she should pack on a few pounds and then they'd have to give her a different one! (I'm kidding, but that's how ridiculous I think it is that the tiny girl is in the slutty costume because of her size)

Sweetheart, I know you always want the best for them, but sometimes they just have to deal with what is happening.

If she is the one that fits into that costume best, then that is why it is happening. Not a slur or anything.

Can you make some modifications to make it look less slutty? Or does the part require her to look more slutty?

On Sunday we went and watched the DVD of my nephew in Rent. I forget the name of the part but he played the gay lover of Angel. He is decidedly NOT gay. NTTAWWT. But it was a great part and he did a great job.

I think he is having more fun being the Dad in Sound of Music though. A bit more macho!

Part of the issue is that Maddie is a modest fifteen year old girl who tries to represent herself in an appropriate way. You don't see her bra straps, you don't see her ass hanging out of her shorts, she doesn't wear shirts where her belly shows, she tries to dress stylishly for school, but also "businesslike." Her fashion muse is Audrey Hepburn, she wants to be a classy person. Unlike some of the girls in the show, she hasn't had sex backstage countless times...

She's going to wear the costume, because she does't want to cause problems, but she is just sort of bemused that somebody found the costume appropriate for her and her character.

So is it okay for the overweight girl to be put in a burlap sack, while all the other girls are in princess costumes? Sorry, we have one burlap sack, and it fits you the best...

I just think if that were the case more people would see it as an injustice.

I also think it is not necessarily part of the role, it's not like she was cast as "slutty maid" and should therefore know what she's getting herself into. It's just based on her size and that's not always fair. The small can be offended too.

PSM, good for her for going through with it anyway...but like I said, it's okay for you to be upset about it. It's also okay for you to be proud that you raised a daughter who has to be talked into slutty clothes, instead of the other way around!!

PSM, can you describe the details of this party scene? Are the girls playing named characters or are they extras? Are they all portraying party-going peers of the Montagues and/or Capulets, household servants attending to said party-goers, or a mixture of both? The costumes should fit the roles of the characters being portrayed.

That's why it's called acting.
