Studs Turkel Dies

Studs Turkel, a Chicago author, passed away today after living a full, wonderful life. His voice was a unique, gravly tone with a great storytelling style. His books, Working, Hard Times, The Good War,he captured the everyday man and the good, the bad and the life-shaping. He will be missed.

I got to hear him speak about a million years ago while I was still in college. Gravel voice and all, he was a great speaker.
He took a couple minutes to blast the movie Five Easy Pieces because of the way the Nicholson character treated the waitress -- said how it got laughter and applause in the theatre, but it was one of the most horrible things he'd ever seen in a movie, that people who work that hard should be treated with dignity and respect.
A very impressive person. RIP.

if you have a chance, listen to the archives of his voice online. he had the greatest interview skills. He would take anyone and find the unique about them. His greatest accomplishment was his interviews with the veterans from WWII. He had the most reticent open up. He was such a great listener.
He also had the bawdiest sense of humor and loved the ladies!

Also appeared as a sportswriter in the movie "Eight Men Out".
