A little help- Why did Phils' fans boo the Rays?

My last World Series-related post.

This was the only thing that bothered me about Phils' fans last night- the only time I thought they showed little to no class.

I understood it (and applauded) when they greeted Bud Selig with resounding boos.

But why, when David Montgomery praised the Rays (which is the typical thing the winning owner does) and asked for the fans to give it up for Tampa did the fans boo?

I know they play in spring training a lot, but there's no heated rivalry there.

Melly? Any long-time Phils' fan? Can you explain that? Is there more between these two teams than we know about?

It's the City of Brotherly Shove. The fans are brutal. They threw mustard on the family of one of the Rays' guys (not a player but an office guy) because they were wearing Rays gear.

It's what they do. Steve won't go to a game in Philly any more unless it's Penn.

They could been playing the Mormon Tabernacle Softball team in the World Series, and they woulda still booed them when the owner decided to praise them.

We Midwestern fans have been led to believe that this is just the way things work on the East Coast. I was not the least bit surprised when they started booing. I doubt there's any history at all with the Rays....

At least they didn't throw any batteries at anyone....... :P

I myself was wondering if they were booing when I heard a clip on the radio.

However, I also know that Eagles fans have booed Santa Claus and cheered horrible injuries to opposing players. I am sure that Melly would have stood and cheered Tampa if she was there.

Hey! That's different!

When we Pirates' fans were throwing batteries, we were throwing them at OUR OWN PLAYERS!!!!!

Because that's who they are?

Philadelphia fans boo their OWN teams, why wouldn't they boo everybody else as well?

Well- I know wht everybody's saying about Philly fans (not all of them, of course. I, too, agree that Melly would have cheered the Rays), but it's the first time I've ever seen it done during the post-Series celebration, so I was hoping there was a different reason that I didn't know about.

Hey, everyone can not be like Nebraska football fans, where we cheer the opposing team as they leave the field after every game. :)

(Sure, it was easier during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, when we were nearly always the winner after the game, but the fans still continued the trend during the dark days of the Callahan era -- even though there were far fewer cheering since many fans walked out last year well before the end of the game.)

Me and Michael Irvin are shocked, SHOCKED, that the Philly fans booed the Rays. This is incomprehensible!

I just hope Santa Claus doesn't show up at the victory parade....

Probably not Santa- but maybe the Great Pumpkin.

I attended a Phillies game about 4 years ago.

They booed the guy who sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."

Also, on the visiting team was a player who had been drafted by the Phillies, but let it be known he would never play for Philadelphia. This guy was booed when the lineup was announced, he was booed when he was in the on-deck circle, he was booed when he was at bat, he was booed when he...you get the idea.

And, when this guy hit a foul into the 3rd base stands, I saw something I'd never seen, before or since.

The Phillie fans threw back a foul ball.

I didn't see it. We'd gone outside to watch the impromtu conga line of neighborhood kids banging on pots. When we came back, we channel surfed between Comcast SportsNet's coverage and local TV.

We completely forgot about the Fox post-game show. They showed part of it later on Comcast and I didn't really hear any booing during Dave Montgomery's speech but that just could have been the audio level.

I have no idea why the fans would have booed the Rays.

Bud, yes, but the Rays, no.

Unless it was Matt Garza's mouthing off before Game 3 about how, after facing the Red Sox and the White Sox, [and the Yankees and the Tigers] the Phillies' lineup would be decidedly inferior and a relative piece of cake.

I would think that the back-to-back homers by Chase Utley and Ryan Howard off Garza would have taken care of that, though.

So, I can't answer your question except to say there are jerks every place. Which isn't much of an answer.

A co-worker and her husband had a fine time with a bunch of Rays fans in the 300 level Monday night and last night.

There's an area behind the seats where you can stand and watch the game while you eat - a little snack bar type of thing. They had a lovely conversation with some folks who are long-time Rays fans. The husband of one couple had a vintage Wade Boggs Devil Rays jersey.

My co-worker thought it was cute that the Rays fans didn't understand why the Phillies fans kept standing and cheering the whole time. As opposed to sitting down and clapping.

Anyway, they were very nice people and I hope they went away with a good impression of Phillies fans from my co-worker and her husband.

I also can't figure out what Joe Maddon was talking about when he was talking about throwing mustard packs. I don't think CBP has mustard packs. It has dispensers by the consession stands for the condiments.

Whatever it was, they shouldn't have been throwing it at a little kid, but I don't think it was mustard packs.

I think I mentioned here in an earlier thread, despite my lifelong status as a National League fan, I would have been rooting for the Rays in the World Series had they played anyone but the Phillies.

The worst-to-first was/is a very compelling story and I think they will be a force in the AL for a while.

So, yeah, I would have cheered.

Edited to add: BTW, Mitch Williams is a baseball analyst for Comcast SportsNet (and a VERY good one, too. He's no homer -- dast I use that term regarding Mitchy-poo).

I wish I had a buck for everytime a fan yelled, "Mitch, all is forgiven!" - or some variation - during the post-game show last night. And the show went 2 1/2 hours, so there was lots of opportunity.

Even laid back Cardinals fans did that the day Sam Holbrook had the audacity to eject Mark McGwire from a game in the first inning when he was about 8 HR's short of Roger Maris' record. The Braves were the visitors that day, and most if not all balls the Braves hit into the stands were tossed back onto the field in protest. My aunt, a huge Braves fan, was at that game and was annoyed to the point of tears.

Mark McGwire always brought out the absolute worst of St. Louis fans, which is why it's so ironic we developed that "Best Fans in Baseball®" reputation while he was here.....

JD Drew?

JD is his own sub-category. He said nasty, mean things and the fans have never let him forget it.

We revel in his unreached potential.

Yeah, that's who it was.

I always get him confused with JT Snow.

I was thinking that it had to be J.D. Drew!

If the World Series is ever played in December - and it looks like it might be, in our lifetime- they just might.

Eagles fans threw snowballs at Santa:
