So what happens as soon as we get a new computer with Windows Vista? MS announces an upcoming beta test for a new OS, Windows 7. It supposedly fixes some of the problems and complaints about Vista. The news report quotes someone from MS saying in effect that some of the Vista features seemed like good ideas to the designers but weren't actually shown to real users until implementation.

One feature of Win7 is the ability to turn off some of the alerts you get with Vista. I haven't played with Alfred too much yet, but it gives me an alert every time I try to open a program, asking me if I want to open the program. Whose dumb idea was that? Makes me want to yell "No, I just clicked on the icon to mess with your CPU!" How about a detection on whether the "open" instruction came from the keyboard or mouse, or via a link activated by one of those?

Let's hope he got crummy presents for his birthday today.

Yes, turn of the stupid UAC! The intent was so that potential malware wouldn't run without your permission. The problem with that is that people get using to clicking "Yes" for everything so often, that they miss the occasional time they should click "No'. I ran into the same thing with firewalls that block outgoing connections each time.

The data transfer is still not done. GW's IT guy is loaning us a brand-new 80GB external HD to do it, with a cable that he knows will work to do this with Vista. Wish me luck tonight!
