The weather is just AWFUL right now- and it looks like it's beginning to affect the pitchers (Kazmir for sure- and hamels looked a little bothered the last two innings).

Of course...my back was to the TV as I typed this- I looked up...and it doesn't look so bad there now.

Still pretty cruddy where I live (about 45 minutes NW of Citizens Bank Park).

Now they gotta keep going- tied 2-2.

Shame on MLB...it was well-known the weather was going to be like this. It's supposed to keep raining until early tomorrow evening...they should have postponed the thing before it even started.

Since the game is now tied they are saying it might be suspended if they cannot resume tonight. I am pretty sure that would be a first for a World Series game in my memory. This, along with the umpiring in the Series, is not Bud Selig's finest hour, not that he has had many fine hours as the Commissioner.

It would have been worse had the game ended with a Phillies' Series victory on the strength of a 5-1/2 inning game.

And if the Phillies lose this game, there are going to be some PISSED OFF Phillies' fans that this game was started.

I forgot- tomorrow's forecast is for a mix of rain and snow, and when it blows out, 55-mph winds.

They may not even be able to resume this game until WEDNESDAY.

Even if they had suspended the game at the end of the fifth inning, it still would have been a suspended game with the Phillies leading 2-1.

According to Selig, they would not have called the game.

I think they should have suspended it after the fifth inning because, by playing one-half inning, MLB gave the Rays a significant advantage.

Cole Hamels had to pitch in slop. BJ Upton got on base because the sloppy field. It's a routine ground ball to Jimmy Rollins earlier.

Now, whoever starts the bottom of the sixth for the Rays does it with a dry mound.

I do not believe the rulebook would have allowed Selig to do that.

Here is the new rule:

Officially, Rule 4.12 (a) states: "A game shall become a suspended game that must be completed at a future date if the game is terminated ... (due to) weather, if a regulation game is called while an inning is in progress and before the inning is completed, and the visiting team has scored one or more runs to take the lead."

AFAIK, a game can only be suspended if the VISITORS are leading and an inning has not yet been completed.

They cannot suspend a game that the home team is leading.

But Selig is a putz.

PS You KNOW they wanted the Rays to score that run.

JC Romero just said on TV that the guys in the bullpen would really like to comment but they couldn't actually SEE anything from the bullpen.

Someone better go down to the Comcast Tower to make sure that William Penn figurine they stuck up there (so Billy can once again be the highest point in Center City) hasn't been blown down by the wind and rain.

This is just the kind of shit my Dad would have been royally pissed off at. This is what happens when you extend the damn season into the later fall. It's almost November and it's going to be cold in most of the MLB cities.

Too bad they couldn't play in the Skydome - nice and warm and dry.

The tying of the game was just what they wanted. How CONVENIENT. Hope the Phillies take it tomorrow - they deserve it after tonight.

Tonight was a dismal farce of a spectacle, and yet no one in MLB will ever say so. Outdoors, an hour and a half later than games begin in the season, lasting routinely close to or past midnight, end of October in the Northeast, and owing to TV playing in all weather. Even Bowie Kuhn in his shirtsleeves is spinning at 20 mHz. And accordingly... it was so (((UU(&Y*T(* evident they were waiting for a tie, so they could suspend the game -- they ought to put it in the rules officially that all innings count in post-season under all circumstances and you have to play 9, eventually; other sports change game rules for playoffs -- most notably the unlimited overtime for the Stanley Cup.

Otherwise, or for that matter not otherwise as well, you might as well find a neutral domed or warm-weather site, like for the Super Bowl, or build a World Series stadium at Disney World, or play the Series in Shanghai for the benefit of the balance of foreign trade.

They were lying to save face. That was the original forecast, but it moved up quicker than expected. But this change occurred a couple of HOURS before game time...plenty of time to postpone the game.

I know- I live here, and the rain started at ~5:00.

There is NO FRIGGIN' WAY you can not play a World Series game, in particular the potential Series clincher, to anything but its entirety. I can't believe the rainout rules would even exist in the postseason. If they do, they shouldn't....

I agree that the game should have never even been started. Quit worrying about how it might mess up the damn TV schedule, and play the games when you can.....

It wasn't raining in Philly during the afternoon, was it.......?

They could have played the game in the afternoon....and now, the way the forecast is, they may not have a window to play the game until Thursday (so maybe Hamels can come back on short rest if that happens and there's a game 7).

But Selig sold out to TV...and only made himself look dumber by saying he had the players' safety in mind when he suspended it.

Sorry, Bud, but you're an ass. The field was a swamp by the late 4th inning, and a lake by the 6th.

And let me tell you- Philly fans and players are LIVID right now. Charlie Manuel risked a fine by refusing to have a press conference last night. An unnamed pitcher (anyone who's a Philly fan or follows baseball will know who) said "That (bleeping) idiot. I wouldn't let him supervise one of my s**its. He doesn't have a clue. He doesn't have a bleeping clue".

If somehow the Phillies go on to lose this Series, I might think about going out of town for a few days.

It hasn't all been a cakewalk in my neverending effort to lead this great Renaissance of Major League Baseball. Right now I have a dozen Fox executives on my back bitching about the TV ratings and how I can ensure that two teams that actually matter make it to the World Series next year. THAT is something I am concerned about, not a bunch of whining from people who enjoy booing mall Santas. Why in the hell did Manny not get the damn Dodgers into the Series? What is it, 80 and sunny in LA today?

Next time, Philly Phaithful, build a damn dome stadium. Look at my treasure chest in Milwaukee. A lot of taxpayer dollars and years of selling lemons made sure that if Milwuakee ever gets to host the November Classic, we won't have to put up with that slop Mother Nature enjoys dumping on places like Philadelphia....

Jeemie, I have to disagree with your assessment that the Commissioner could not suspend the game after 5 innings, based on the rulebook. He is the Commissioner. He is not constrained by the rulebook. It is like saying that the Supreme Court can't decide a case in a certain way because of previous precedent.

Everyone knew that there is no way that a World Series game, let alone the clinching game, is called before a full game is played.

I have heard that Selig will make it the official rule. In fact, I imagine that he will state that all playoff games must be played to their completion (no less than 9 innings).
