It's official - the Hughes family has been shown their new house. The big reveal, originally scheduled for 2PM, was moved up to noon because of fears about the weather. One of my co-workers went there this morning, arriving with the first shuttle at 8AM; she called to let us know of the change in schedule and also to let us hear the "Move that bus!" shout over her phone. She also has a video camera so we should be able to see things, too. It's a good thing she got there early, she said, because she was in the 2nd row. People who came later expecting a 2PM reveal were quite a ways back.

I hope that the Hughes family is prepared to have strangers knocking on their doors all of the time, wanting to see the house.

Well, my original post was a little premature. The bus didn't actually get moved until 4:15. Our co-worker on the scene called us and gave us a play-by-play narrative and we got to hear Ty and the Hughes family shout, "Bus driver, move that bus!" They also showed clips of the big reveal on the local news last night, as well as reports from a big party held for the volunteers and the design team.

A few last comments:

1. I didn't know this until last night but one of our church members worked very closely with the design team. She works for an organization that helps visually-impaired people and she was part of the discussion for what would be appropriate for Patrick, who is blind. She met and interacted with all five members of the design team, and also served as a "garbage girl" during the construction. Evidently the pace of the work is so quick that it takes a team of people just to pick up discarded containers (boxes, etc.) and move things like paint cans around.

2. The show will air in February and will be a special two-part episode.

3. The family was sent to London and there are rumors that Patrick, an accomplished pianist, got to perform with "an English music legend" - reportedly Elton John.

4. The cost to maintain the house will be a lot ($10,000 per year was one figure given) but since the family won't have mortgage payments any longer and there have been donations given above and beyond the amount needed to pay off their mortgage, they will have a reserve fund for this purpose.

5. On a side note - Kynt, from TAR, who is from Louisville, was onsite over the weekend, serving meals to the volunteers. He works for a restaurant chain called "Texas Roadhouse" and they were helping with the food. He was "dressed down" while he was there (evidently what he's wearing on TAR is designed to be "showier" than his normal Goth wear) so many people didn't recognize him.

The co-worker who went to the big reveal yesterday brought her video camera in and showed us what she saw. One of the nice things that the design team did was to have a sculptor create a 3D model of the house so Patrick could "see" it. The co-worker also said that the ABC film crew had the family go up to the door and then back several times before they were satisfied with the video shot of them "entering" the house.

No, but I think that includes everything such as insurance, utility bills, etc.

The electric bill alone for my beach house runs over a grand three months out of the year. Of course, these are renters probably running the AC on "Alaska" while keeping doors and windows open. When I got the first one like that, I called the company to see if there was a one-week spike, like if a renter had an RV in the driveway hooked into the power, but no luck. The next two months were just as bad. Cost of doing business....
