And now for something completely different!

Here's a catchy song that I haven't heard in years. It's a one-hit wonder from 1977. Can you name the artist?

I really wasn't all that familer with Dean Friedman but I saw that he wrote a song that I was familer with because I've heard the Barenaked Ladies cover it. I was suprised to see it has something in common with another song by another group that I like. That other groups name is a varient of the other Friedman. So here are your questions:
Which Dean Friedman song was covered by BNL's and why did it run into trouble?
What is another song that ran into trouble with the same group that had a problem with the aforementioned song, causing that song to change a lyric?
Who is the group the wrote/recorded the second song and because of its name closes the chain?

Which Dean Friedman song was covered by BNL's and why did it run into trouble? BNL has covered DF's "McDonalds Girl." I'm assuming some global corporation had problems with the use of its name. Added: Based on the wording of the next question, I will guess that it was the BBC who was worried about pissing off McDonalds.

What is another song that ran into trouble with the same group that had a problem with the aforementioned song, causing that song to change a lyric? Lola. The BBC made Ray Davies change "Coca Cola" to "cherry cola."

Yay, Frogman! Shouts out to 2 of my favorite bands!

They play Ariel on the Music Choice 70's station a lot. Not as much as One Tin Soldier or Never Can Say Goodbye, but enough that I've heard it very recently....

And thank goodness there's only a little over 2 months before I (hopefully) bring LS back to the Bored. We need it......

Good thing I read the rest of the messages before I buzzed in with the correct answer and took the points! I loved Rick Coonce with all the fervor that my little 10 year old heart could muster and it still goes pitter patter whenever I hear Midnight Confessions.

Here's an interesting bit of trivia for "The Office" fans... I just found this on Wikipedia re The Grasss Roots. (Creed Bratton was The Grass Roots' lead vocalist/guitarist and songwriter from '67- '71, same era as the Coonce days):

Guitarist Creed Bratton plays a character also named Creed Bratton, a fictional version of himself, in the US version of the television show "The Office." In a scene that never aired from the episode "Booze Cruise," Bratton's boss, Michael, borrowed the guitar from a cruise ships band and plays it poorly. Bratton then takes the guitar from Michael and proceeds to surprise the rest of the passengers with his excellent playing. The scene then cuts to a confessional, where Bratton talks of his time with The Grass Roots, complete with pictures of the actual band and references to actual tours. In another deleted scene from the episode "Product Recall," a fictional Scranton Times writer notices Bratton was a member of The Grass Roots. He also sang one of his own songs titled "Spinnin' N Reelin'" in the episode "A Benihana Christmas."

I would have loved to have seen those deleted scenes; I'm still a big "Office" fan. Have always gotten a big kick out of Creed, but had no idea of his pedigree.

I'll bet you're remembering Coonce from later performances, perhaps on Midnight Special or similar, where bands would sometimes perform their older hits. I sure wish they still had shows like that...
