Quadrennial Bored Presidential Prophecy Contest
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY.
The Questions:
Q1 – Who will win the 2008 presidential election?
Q2 - List the states the winner of the 2008 presidential election will carry by dint of getting all or most of the electoral votes from that state. (The District of Columbia is considered a state.)
DAILY DOUBLE STATES:
Florida
Indiana
Missouri
North Carolina
Ohio
DON'T LIST THE DAILY DOUBLE STATES SEPARATELY. JUST INCLUDE THE ONES YOU PREDICT THE WINNER WILL TAKE IN YOUR LIST.
Q3 (Tiebreaker)
Q3 (a) What percentage of the popular vote (rounded to the nearest whole number) will Barack Obama carry in North Dakota?
Q3(b) What percentage of the popular vote (rounded to the nearest whole number) will John McCain carry in Nevada?
Q3(c) What will the Dow Jones Industrial Average (rounded to two decimal places) be at the end of trading Tuesday, November 4?
Q3(d) What is the total of your responses to questions Q3(a), (b) and (c)? (You didn't expect me to do the math on these, did you?)
The Rules:
A. Answering the questions:
Q1 - ONLY contestants who correctly answer Q1 will be eligible to win the contest.
Q2 - List ONLY the states which the winner of the election carries, and please list them in alphabetical order. Do NOT use postal abbreviations, please write out the entire name of the state.
Question 2 will be scored this way:
+1 point for each state on your list carried by the winner.
-1 point for each state not on your list carried by the winner
-2 points for each state on your list not carried by the winner
With the exception of
DAILY DOUBLE STATES.
+2 points for each DD state on your list carried by the winner
-2 points for each DD state not on your list carried by the winner
-4 points for each DD state on your list not carried by the winner
Only list those DD states which the winner carries.
Q3 - The contestant whose TOTAL of those three numbers is closest to the total of the actual results WITHOUT GOING OVER will win the tiebreaker. If contestants tie the tiebreaker total, then the contestant who picked the DJIA closest without going over will win the tiebreaker. If there is still a tie, then the tied contestants will be given an essay question to be judged by the judges in their (my) sole discretion.
BONUS POINTS:
There will be a 3-point bonus for anyone who posts their answers before Noon, Eastern Time, October 28.
The winner will be the entrant who correctly selects the winner of the presidential election and has the most points.
B- Posting your entry:
-All entries must be posted prior to Noon, Eastern Time, MONDAY, November 3.
-Only post answers in this thread. Please do not post anything but answers in this thread. -There will be another thread for comments, questions or the unlikely complaints.
-Only one entry per contestant.
-Bud Collyer Rule: “No changes, no consultation.” No changes to answers are allowed once an entry is posted. Put your answers in anti-spoiler boxes. No peeking at other entries until you have entered. This means you.
C: Miscellaneous:
-If a state splits its electoral votes, the winner of a state will be deemed to be the candidate who gets the majority of votes in that state. If the candidates tie in electoral votes in a given state, there will be no winner for that state.
-The source for determining the winner of a given state and vote tallies will be the results posted in the New York Times on Thursday, November 6. If a given race is not resolved by then, it will be solely in the discretion of the judges (me) to decide how to rule on that state.
-All decisions of the judges will be arbitrary, prejudiced and final.
The winner will receive a copy of “Double-Take,” the much-anticipated new Christmas pageant published by Abingdon Press, and written by, well, me, including the two pages which the publisher left out (don’t ask).

OK, I've had my prediction for a while now. I have been wavering about a few of these, but I'm not gonna change anything. The last thing I want to do is miss out on winning Double-Take because I switched an answer or two!
Here goes:
Q1. Despite my crucial vote in the swing state of Maryland, it's gonna be Obama.
Q2. California
Colorado
Connecticut
Delaware
District of Columbia
Florida
Illinois
Iowa
Hawaii
Maine
Maryland
Massachussetts
Michigan
Minnesota
Nevada
New Hampshire
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
North Carolina
Ohio
Oregon
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
Vermont
Washington
Wisconsin
Daily Double States: Missouri and Indiana go McCain. The others go Obama.
Q3a: 42%
Q3b: 49%
Q3c: 9523.68
Q3d: 9624.68
Thoughts: If McCain wins, there may not be a winner of this contest, based on the rules.
McCain's way to victory would be either (a) to tap into a suppressed anti-Obama sentiment that is being under-reported and under-polled and take most of the tossup states and several states thought to be leaning Obama right now or (b) capture all the states I believe he will plus Ohio, NC, and FL, plus either one or two (depending on the electoral votes for the states) of CO, NM, MN, WI and NH.
It is more likely in my view that Obama takes VA, IN, MO and other swing states to make this even more of a rout than for either of the McCain-winning scenarios I outlined above.

I see that Jay is taking a big gamble by picking
Obama
to win
West Virginia
. He must be taking the recent polls from that state very seriously. Personally, I don't think that state is in play, but I've been wrong before.
