Good grief! What sanctions have been put on that dude? Not to mention investigating possible bets on the other team.

To be fair, I saw a website where this was discussed, and someone who is an official said the ump did exactly what he was trained to do when caught in "no man's land" with a player bearing down on him and he couldn't get out of the way.
I don't know, though- to me, it looked like the ump had plenty of time to backtrack to his left.
Ah...but to me, the best block ever by an official was one by the official in Super Bowl XIII that sprung Franco Harris free for a 22-yard touchdown run!

It also looks like he deliberately stepped into the ball carrier, while making no effort to look for what appears to be a fairly obvious "escape route". If the play made a difference in the game's outcome, I'd be more than a little suspicious.

Heh.
Looks to me like an occupational hazard.

Gamecocks only lost by 7- I do not know if this prevented a TD from being scored.

In an earlier play, the ref screened off a tackler from the gamecock ball carrier who went for a large gain. That's why we call it a game. This play was not a game changer.
