I just lost my job
I've felt this coming for some time.
I'm getting five months' severence pay, not quite as good as I expected.
I may be changing careers or even retire, but if you know anyone who works with IBM mainframes, tell them you know of an expert who's looking for a job. I specialize in MQSeries and CICS.

Damn!
Five months' severance pay may not be a golden parachute, but it's still a lot better than what most people get.

Well, that sucks. Good luck with whatever path you choose.

Sorry to hear that.
I see IT jobs posted all the time, though...though they're mostly for databases and software. Don't know how many hardware-type jobs I see.

Lousy, dude.
Know nothing, no one on mainframes. You're in my prayers, though.

I'm so sorry! I hope you were treated with dignity and respect...
Remember, DO NOT apply for unemployment until after your severance runs out. (Unless you get a lump sum)
I'm expecting that unemployment will be extended for 9 months or even a year, so you could have a steady paycheck for quite awhile (even though it will be less, of course)
Keep up your medical insurance and look for low-cost alternatives WITHIN your insurance provider (so you don't have a "break in service" that could come back to haunt you if you try to re-enter the system.)
Don't worry -- you will find something or better yet, WIN something!!
-- dimmzy, I've been there and life is good!

Is the RIF effecting more than just your group? When is your last day at work? Is your employer giving you any help in finding another job?
This is tough news, Bob. I'll add your name to my prayer list.

Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!

I'm so sorry, Bob. I hope you will find a new situation soon, whether that is a new job, new career or retirement.

Eeeek. So sorry to hear.
I am not in good shape either but can't elaborate on this board.
Currently still have job; that's about it.
Good luck in your search if you decide to have one.

Re: I just lost my job
That sucks.
I'd suggest looking into consulting. As the mainframe market winds down and those like you retire, those who still have the big boys will find it hard to get folks who know anything about them. Nobody coming out of school now can read a core dump or understand a S07.

Re: I just lost my job
I'm sorry to hear the news, but I'm glad that your financial circumstances are such that you can consider retirement rather than a new job search. Job searches are always much less stressful when work is an option, rather than a necessity. --BobBob Juch wrote:I've felt this coming for some time.

I guess you could say I already am. If I wasn't supporting my daughter, I'd be in fine shape.silvercamaro wrote:I'm sorry, Bob. This could be your opportunity to become a professional poker player, though.
