are your schools off for Columbus Day?

#1 Post by lilyvonschtupp26 » Mon Oct 13, 2008 9:33 am

I was wondering if all the schools are closed in your area and if you get the day off too?

I'm home trying to catch up with homework and lesson plans. My husband's working from home today. he asked if all around the country do schools close? what's up in your area?

Kids are off.

Wife is off (since she's a crossing guard for the school, it figures).

I'm not.

GW and I are at work.

Schools are closed today at my Long Island school district. They were also closed on the Jewish holdiays.

My kids are in school today. Oddly enough, they were off last Monday for a school holiday and Tuesday for a teacher work day. I think other school districts in my area are off today. I guess our district just got the wrong week or something...

Some of the kids in the Sylmar area of the Valley don't have school today. It was cancelled due to the fire.

I don't know about the schools, but I'm off because it's a bank holiday even though the stock market is open (and up over 600 points!).

Houston schools are in session today.

When I was a kid in Indiana and a teacher in Michigan we never got Columbus Day off.

The federal courthouse in Houston is closed today and I got the day off this time. On King Day, George Washington's Birthday, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, and the day after Thanksgiving the courthouse is closed but we have to have a person on duty in the library. I'll be covering the day after Thanksgiving again this year. I think I did Washington's Birthday last spring.

I just sent the little darlings home. We've been in session today, but have Thursday and Friday as "Fall Break". Kids get to sleep in and/or goof off. Teachers have mandatory Professional Development from 8-3:45 on Thursday, then get Friday off. Grades have to be turned in on 10/20, so many folks will be finalizing grades.

Schools were mostly closed here in S.F. even if the holiday was called:
Discovery Day
Indigenous People's Day
Italian-American Day

I work at a pre-school and we were open. We'll also be open on Veterans Day, but we make up for that by closing the whole week for Thanksgiving.

In the classes where I teach we had 21/28 present in the morning and 9/14 in the afternoon in attendance. For the staff we had two "call in sick."

My Dad used to work testing schools and office buildings for asbestos. He was on the phone once with the superintendent of a school located on an Indian Reservation.

He said "I'll come by on Columbus Day when the kids are out and test the building," he said. "Wait, do you celebrate Columbus Day there?"

"We take the day off, but we don't celebrate it," the superintendent replied.

Many of these (squirrel) migrations were probably caused by food shortages as well as habitat overcrowding. We solved that for them. We not only reduced their habitat, we reduced the whole species by about 90%. The least we can do now is share a little birdseed with them.

Thank you very much for the picture. That's a reasonable likeness of my office. Did you already post this once before?

And a very nice poster of #13 on the Dynamo. That would be Ricardo Clark, our defending mid-fielder. He is a very good player, an annual All-Star, and has appeared for the U.S. National team. He even scored a goal against Paraguay in the Copa America last summer.

The day after Christmas will be the interesting one this year. Christmas Eve will be a regular work day but December 26 is a Friday. The Chief Judge of the district might close the courthouse that day or the Chief Judge of the Circuit might declare the day a holiday for the Circuit staff.

We may have to have a person on duty that day or we might not. There is a hockey game that night in Houston so if we have to have someone work I'll probably work.
