I'm not sure if this chapter of McCain's biography is widely known, but it's news to me. According to this thread on the J! board, McCain was a one-day champion on Jeopardy in 1965. That impresses me a lot more than some of his more familiar credentials. It might even influence a few undecided voters, if it were better known.

I'd love to see that episode. 1965 would have been pre-POW.

It's possible that the tape doesn't exist anymore- remember, NBC destroyed all of their tapes of the Tonight Show before 1972 because they needed storage space, so they may have been as cavilier with J!.

Since no footage has turned up, that's probably true. And it's a shame.

On the other hand, I'd be delighted if Sony destroyed my tape, but that's not going to happen. Soon enough, anyway.

I thought I remembered seeing a clip of John Glenn with Groucho on "You Bet Your Life." He may have been on "Tune" as well, but I don't remember that.

I think he was on "Name That Tune" along with child actor, Eddie Hodges. I very well could be disremembering.

I never did see the actual clip; however, part of the appearance was re-enacted in the movie "The Right Stuff".

Various sources say that Glenn appeared on both "You Bet Your Life" and "Name That Tune."

This seems to be rather strange that they would destroy those tapes. Days of Our Lives started in November of 1965 and all the episodes have been saved all these years.
