WWTBAM Bored

Thinking they could raise the level of political discourse in this country by being halfway civil to each other in a presidential campaign. Elections have turned into one of the circuses for the American public, and we by Golly want HATE! McCain and Obama try to show respect to the other at their rallies, and they get practically booed off the stage.

All one has to do is hang out here to become very discouraged about what campaigning has become. If a large percentage of Americans have become convinced that the other party is unmitigated evil, then I'm afraid there's little hope for the system, barring revolutionary reforms. Is that an oxymoron?

I agree with very little that Sen. McCain has to say on social issues, but I don't think he's evil. I agree with very little Sen. Obama has to say on fiscal issues, but I don't think he's evil. I even kinda like both Veep candidates, although Gov. Palin scares me a little on social issues.

Compared to GWB, who has done more to advance what his father called a "New World Order" than any President in history (and I don't mean in a good way), both these guys are saints.

I just had to step out of the Lounge long enough to post a reply to this. I agree with about 95% of what Mr. K. wrote, although I would change "agree with very little" to "am not wholly in agreement with". There are things I see that would make me feel more comfortable with Obama in charge. Likewise, there are things I see that would make me feel more comfortable with McCain in charge. And that is all you are going to get out of me regarding my opinions of the candidates. Period.

But a post like this deserves reply, as well as a bump-to-the-front, even if only for a little while. Given the sludge* that passes for political discourse most of the time on the Bored, I felt it was time to step up and say enough - and to that Mr. K. is not alone in bemoaning how things have become - both in the real world and in our little corner thereof.


(* - I was going to refer to it as "shit" rather than "sludge" - but that would be an insult to the good hard-working shit that is out there fertilizing our fields and gardens. I'm just sayin'.)

I agree, as well. And if I have at any point crossed over incivility myself, I apologize. I assure you it was frustration with a certain level of hysteria that actually could believe a demon from hell -- of either party -- might be running for President.

In resolve to do better, I promise to do a lot of tongue-biting. Of course, I promised that once before, but I'll try to stick to it this time.
