I'm a victim of a political crime

I put up a McCain - Palin sign in my yard yesterday. I left last night to go out of town camping. Today my wife leaves me a message that someone has taken it.

No suspects but there are a lot of acorns in my front yard. Next week I will put up two signs. And set the video camera to loop the front yard continuously. Woah to whomever I catch if they do it again.

My signs never disappear. I live on a cul-de-sac where nobody ever goes.

We had about a dozen people in to HQ today because someone had stolen their signs from locations where lots of people go. :(

A couple of my neighbors have placed their McCain|Palin signs so close to the roadway they're going to get run over.

Some kind of metaphor, perhaps?

Just be thankful that's all they did. In Toronto, several people with Liberal signs on their lawns have had their brakes cut on their cars. That's carrying politics WAY too far.

That's horrible. Can they be prosecuted for attempted murder?

As an Obama supporter let me say...I hope you catch the person(s) who did this and they get prosecuted for the theft.

This behavior is unacceptable by either side.

I think there's hope for catching the brake cutters, but there is none for the sign stealers.

Somebody got mad at the publisher of a free weekly newspaper and stole all the papers out of the stands. The publisher pitched a fit and got no sympathy. How can you steal something that's "free," the thinking went. Actually, I think he could have made a case based on lost advertising exposure, but no one wanted to pursue it, including the advertisers. It died a peaceful death.

Anyway, if there's no hope for that guy, there's no hope for the loss of a free sign. Now if the thieves vandalized the property while they were at it, tore up your new lawn or azalea bushes or something, there might be some hope, and I hope they're caught and have to make restitution.

Translation: Three feet outside their front door.

No, two inches from the pavement. The roads are narrow.

Around here, such signs often are not free. They are sold to supporters to raise campaign funds. There also seems to be a very low legal threshold for shooting someone who is stealing stuff on your property, based on some of the stories that regularly show up in the news. Perhaps Calvinator would have an opinion on whether Texans are allowed to kill people who are in the process of removing a political sign from their yard. (You might have to claim that you feared for your life or some such technicality.) I'm against that, but I do like the idea of setting up a camera and catching the perp in the act.

as a non-lawyer but looking at the Canadian Criminal Code theft is not decided by "market" value but by the fact that you deprive its owner from doing whatever he/she wants to do with it. so at least here the judgment ought to be....

Guilty! Next case!
