BAck to an empty workplace

#1 Post by gsabc » Fri Oct 10, 2008 6:45 am

Hmmm. After taking Yom Kippur off yesterday, I get back to work early today. Call from my main staff member, saying she's in late, but most everyone else won't be in because they were given the day off. Huh?

Apparently there's nothing for them to do today. Nothing going into the freeze-dryers, only a shutdown and unloading which the boss can do. With the holiday on Monday, which we don't have off but other companies do, TPTB figured to just let everyone off for a long weekend. EXCEPT for me, our receptionist (who's a bit bummed about it), and my QA staff. The boss will be in later.

I guess I can get a lot done today. But it'll be quiet. Too quiet.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Help yourself to a <grumble>®.

But that's a better reason for having an empty workplace than the first thing that popped into my mind when I read that subject line!

Still a bit disconcerting. If I didn't know our other site was doing well (client has done a recent FDA submission for a product made there, our first commercial product which will trigger an FDA visit; call it a mixed blessing), I'd be more worried. Things have slowed down here tremendously, and Bossman has been lax in marketing because he's waiting to open our new facility down the road. That's not till Q1 2009.

And now I'm alone.

The Boss took off for parts unknown this morning and told our receptionist that if he wasn't back by 2:00, she could leave. My QA manager left, since no one else is here. And the guy who came over from our other site to do some work finished up and is also gone.

I always have things I can be doing, so I'll hang around for a while, just in case a delivery guy shows up.

I suppose it could just be my breath ...

It's all his fault. That'll be $10.

Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!

That'll be $10, please.

Yup, which is why my breath is the suspect. Or maybe the glare off my bald pate got to be too much for them.

Did TPTB specifically say you had to stay at the office while everyone else could take the day off? Or were you simply overlooked because you had a day off yesterday?

No, I didn't even know the boss was leaving, or that few others would be here today. His head mainly identifies with operations stuff, so while he said they could stay home, he didn't do the same with QA. My manager told him that was unfair, and told our other staff to take the day as well.

His office is still lit, which means that he at least intends to come back. That may be only to tell me to go home and turn off the light. As far as telling me to stay, I'm officially "senior management", not that I have any real power on the business end of things. Right now, it means I get to answer the doorbell if anyone shows up. I don't even have to answer the phone unless it's for me. I still feel an obligation to hang around. For maybe another half-hour.
