They actually had Equate Pepto Bismol!

But it wasn't this time.

Mecca batted .500 yesterday. GV paper towels are back in (accompanied by a higher price), Equate Pepto is apparently taking a dirt nap.

Actually, .333 if I count that the price for a simple 34" card table was $27.00! Without chairs! So, I did without.

Slightly making up for the price bumps was the 1.88/lb tag on the tomatoes.

The prices even vary by store. I think somebody told me once that the store managers can set their prices on some things and the newer stores generally have higher prices to offset start up costs.

I find that it varies here. The oldest, crappiest store in town sometimes has higher prices on selected items than the newest, biggest store close to me.

Re: the Pepto. It's been out for months at all the stores here. It's not even green dotted anymore. When I checked yesterday even the smaller bottle of the maximum strength (read: higher priced) Equate was gone. Just 5485640833 different permutations of Pepto Bismol now.

I seem to recall you saying that you weren't familiar with the phrase 'green dotted'. Maybe it's a local thing. When there's a green sticky dot on the shelf label it means they're just waiting for stock to come in. When it's a red dot that means it's discontinued. That's often accompanied by a red clearance shelf label.

Our department managers used to be able to comp prices based on what the prices were at teh competition, but have no longer been allowed to do that under the new pricing program that kicked in this year. I miss all the little flags with the cheaper comp price that used to litter my detergent aisle....

That must be a regional program. Our district manager once had a program I liked where instead of clearancing off stuff that was about to be discontinued, the department manager was supposed to make a red shelf label for it instead of a yellow one. The price didn't change, but the customers seemed to get the drift..... buy it before it's gone! It worked really well, but for some reason was short-lived....

It might not be the case here anymore either, then. It was a couple years ago that I learned this. As I recall, my sister knew somebody in management at one of the stores and they told her this when she asked why the prices varied from store to store.

Does Mecca have a price code for their store brand items? Walgreens still uses the same code they did when I worked there 25 years ago so I can tell what their cost is on store products. Their markup is surprising low on some things, but they are still overall more expensive so I don't know if the margins are even smaller at Mecca or their cost is lower (probably a combination).

Every time I see it I think of the convention center. I spent a weekend in August each year for almost 20 years there. And the first time I went, I drove around it 7 times - not for any religious reason, but in search of a parking space.

I don't think it's actually a "bored term". People just tolerate it.

*When I see Mecca I giggle because it reminds me of when Confessor asked a similar question to the one AJ asked. I never knew it as Mecca until Fanny coined it that term.

*Although I'm thrilled that we now have the option of getting the Equate brand of Zyrtec for Eric, it doesn't compensate for my irritation that it is no longer covered by our insurance.

*I think that Walmart's produce can be terribly overpriced. Our local, non-big box stores, have lower produce prices than what Walmart has.
Since moving here we haven't planted a garden, but we did start shopping at the local farmer's market. They had great prices with wonderful flavors. Hopefully next year we'll get the garden planted.
