Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio, a French novelist, has been awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature. The academy cited his "new departures, poetic adventure and sensual ecstasy" and said that he was an "explorer of a humanity beyond and below the reigning civilization." One member of the academy took a swipe at the U.S. and why there have been no American authors selected since Toni Morrison in 1993:

"The U.S. is too isolated, too insular. They don't translate enough and don't really participate in the big dialogue of literature," Nobel committee member and permanent secretary Horace Engdahl said. "That ignorance is restraining."
