Houston trip update - AJ & Bix
All is still a go for my trip: Arriving Saturday the 18th, Dynamo vs. LA Galaxy that night, Texans v. Lions the following day, then flying back to NY on Monday. I'll have a rental car and will be staying at the Hilton Hobby Airport.

I guess you heard the news about Beckham. He will be a no-show for the Houston game. Suspended for yellow card accumulation and he can't serve it in the Galaxy game against Colorado because he is playing for England this weekend.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Yellow cards are shown by the referee for particular fouls, usually violent or dangerous conduct, in soccer games. They can also be given for violations sort of like technical fouls in basketball; delay of game, disrespecting the referee, handling a ball on purpose, that kind of thing. They are yellow because it is supposed to be a warning that you are doing something bad and if you keep it up you'll get kicked out of the game.kayrharris wrote:What's a yellow card?
Referees can also give red cards which are for really bad conduct. A red card means you are kicked out the game, your team cannot replace you, and you are suspended for your next game. Mostly they are given if the referee thinks you intended to injure someone or did something illegal that prevented a goal.
If you get two yellow cards in one game that equals a red card with the same punishments.
But just getting one yellow card can also be bad. Most leagues have a yellow card accumulation rule. If you get a certain number of yellow cards over a specific period of time you are suspended for one game. That's what happened to Beckham. Last Saturday he picked up his 5th yellow card, this time for a hard foul, and now has to sit out a game.
No matter where you go, there you are.

I meant to add that the yellow/red card system was introduced in the 1960s as a way to make warnings and ejections clear in a language-neutral way. Before that the referees would tell a player if he had received a warning but there was often some confusion about who had been warned and how severe that warning had been.
So they came up with the cards.
The card system is used in lots of international sports for the same reason.

Plus LA is all but mathematically out of the playoff race. If Becks plays in the midweek Belarus match he'll benefit from the rest afterwards.andrewjackson wrote:Looking forward to seeing you. Sometime before next week we can plan a meeting spot and/or trade contact info.

I am sort of amused that you are travelling to come to a Texans-Lions game. Though I guess the soccer is an added feature.jacorbett70 wrote:P.M. sent to AJ and email sent to Bix.

If you want to get a sense of the tailgates, here's some reports I've done for AOL for a feature we do called FanHouse in the Stands. (Yes, there's a few pictures of me in there. Eek. The Mario Bros only agreed for me to use their picture if I used the one with me in it too).

AJ, you need to come to the tailgating too. I have a great set up now.

Bix-
Your writing is fab. I especially like this part.
But, when it finally comes together and your team starts winning games it is so very choice.

I really hope that you all don't have to suffer as long as we did. 40 years is a long, long time to suffer, my friend. I feel your pain. You're suffering thru Sage Rosenwhatever like we suffered thru Ken Stabler, Aaron Brooks, and John Fourcade.Or, as I learned from my long suffering New Orleans Saints friends, "Win or lose, we still booze."
But, when it finally comes together and your team starts winning games it is so very choice.

PM received and replied.
The tailgate tour will probably be the highlight of the day. Especially since I'm rooting for the Lions.
