There was a question at Maddie's Quiz Bowl tournament about Mailer today. The kids didn't know who he was.

No loss on their part.

Actually, it was a 10 point loss. :)

I only read The Naked and the Dead and thought at the time that it was pretty good. But, he was pretty much an asshole.

I read "Armies of the Night" and "Tough Guys Don't Wear Plaid When They Dance." [Sorry for the quotation marks, for those who care.]

I remember being engaged by both, but not much more about them.

I've been interested enough through the years to learn a fair bit -- (but not all that much) -- about the crowd of that time and place, when he made his mark.

He cut a figure enough to be included in that crowd. If I'd have been in that crowd, my guess is that we would've been willing to tolerate each other fairly well, but that we would have gotten into at least one fist-fight, and been in at least one together against others.

I don't know how I know this, but I'm pretty sure that that would've been the case.

I haven't been in a real fight as an adult, I guess, but I've come pretty close too many times.

I did get beaten up that one time at a club, but that wasn't really a fight.

Mailer was formidable. A noteworthy man.

His name is mentioned in what I consider to be the sexiest scene ever in a mainstream movie, so I guess we can thank him for that, too.
