Norm MacDonald, famous celebrity WWTBAM contestant?

Besides filling in for conservative Dennis Miller's radio show on occasion, he is known for being the only celebrity to reach the million-dollar question - and then quitting - on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"
Really? People still remember that?
On giving up on the final question when he was a celebrity contestant on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"
At the time I was devastated. During the entire game I was looking at Regis and I wasted some of my lifelines before that by thinking I saw something in his face. After the show, they told me, "Oh, no, Regis doesn't know any of the answers."

Of course, it's a part of Bored history!!!!!! You weren't around for the resulting firestorm over Regis talking him out of going for that million dollar question.....

I did save one snippet from it.... a poster who apparently had a double standard when it came to real and celebrity contestants.....

That is where Kati made her mistake! She shouldn't have
assumed at all that Regis was trying to help her. That is
not his position on the show, and even tho' he may have
seemed to help her earlier does not mean he was required
to do so for every question.
What would you all be saying if the moment Kati said 'Tonga',
Regis lickedy-split said "final answer"...and she was wrong????
Poor Regis would have been accused of rushing her
answer..instead because he seemed to want her to leave
with a large sum of money he is catching heck. Give the
man a break...he was only doing his job...and a good job
it is.

Subject: We can make a difference.....

I feel exactly the same as most of the posters here tonight,
which is to say that what happened to Norm MacDonald
was totally irresponsible. However rather than 'whine' about
it...I went to www.holeinthewallgang.org, the official website
of Norm's charity, and donated $10.00.
What better statement can we make? Just donate a dollar
or two....on behalf of Norm. I know i will sleep well now...and
hopefully wake up to find that Regis Philbin has put an end
to this whole messy situation. I am not a 1st time poster
and enjoy visiting here quite often. I do believe, however,
that when someone else has wronged another they should
have the humility to admit as such and make it right.
Good night all.....thanks for some verrrrry interesting
reading. Karen

And, another infamous Norm McDonald reference....

Subject: Tubadave, Norm and the Curse of Seat #9

Upon returning last month from my unsuccessful RoF
appearance, Tubadave noted that, like me, he spent the
whole show watching from #9, and went on to offer his
opinion that the seat is cursed. Looking back over my
earlier posts today, I realized that Norm MacDonald did
not get to the Hot Seat until he left seat #9 and moved to #5.
Hell, if he hadn't moved, we would probably still be watching
him trying to beat the FF question...

Isn't this false? I thought Drew Carey and perhaps some other celebs also reached $500K.

Both Drew Carey and Rosie O'Donnell quit on the $1M question in the first celebrity series in May 2000, according to my files on the Yahoo board. Only Norm MacDonald made it that far in any of the other celebrity shows, including Olympics, Rock Stars, and TV personalities shows. Norm does have the distinction of being the only contestant whose fastest finger sequence was in the order ABCD (put the letters N, O, R, M in order to spell a celebrity's first name, when he was the only one remaining). The fastest finger sequence was never random during the primetime show.

Sorry, I had forgotten that MacDonald is neither funny nor a celebrity.

Blech....
