Answers and Points Timeline Finale, Game 21 September 29-30

(Sorry this took so long, I've been typing this for almost two hours and have been interrupted 48054833 times!)

Here we are the the finale game! Where did the month go? This one will be open a little longer than usual and will close at 8 pm Tuesday evening so that scores and final standing can be posted by the next morning (October 1). Although I don't think anybody is planning on doing an October Timeline, it's still nice to have things wrapped up promptly so the new games can begin (now that I resurrected Timeline, Bandstand and Primetime are next. Any takers?).

So, you've waited all through September, dreading the day when you were going to have to wade through a bunch of serial killers and whatnot. Well, fear not, no serial killer Timeline this month! Just some notable celebrity murders. But there's a difference this time. You're getting the a Year Well and a Victim Well! Nothing could be easier, right?

Well, not so fast. There are 14 names in the Victim Well, but only half of them belong to the clues. You'll have to come up with the other half on your own. No bogies in the Year Well, I figured you had enough as it was. Ha!

Scoring: 10 points per year
10 points per person in the Well
20 points per person on your own
50 total points in a 3 part bonus question

That's right, 400 possible points, yay!

Double Bogie Timeline - September 29

"Half and Half"

1. Silent film star who was beaten and asphyxiated (with a personal gift from Rudolph Valentino) by a pair of hustler brothers for what turned out to be $20.

2. This former Playmate and aspiring starlet's shotgun death by her estranged husband was made into a movie starring Mariel Hemingway.

3. Known as the Ice Cream Blonde, this comic actress was found in her garage, dead of carbon monoxide poisioning. Officially a suicide, the motor was off, gas was still in the tank and she had been hit in the head.

4. This Olympic skier was shot by Andy Williams' ex-wife Claudine Longet. Who received a 30 day sentence, which was served after she returned from a vacation with her defense attorney (and future husband). Which, for Aspen, is pretty hardcore!

5. Former child actor of Our Gang fame, he was shot trying to collect a $50 dollar debt stemming from someone losing his dog.

6. Mickey Cohen goon and abusive boyfriend of Lana Turner, he was stabbed on Good Friday by her daughter Cheryl Crane. It was ruled justifiable homicide and, according to Crane's autobiography, he turned around suddenly and ran onto a kitchen knife she was holding in the pocket of her nightrobe.

7. Gaining fame for his role as Plato in Rebel Without a Cause, he was stabbed in an alley by a pizza deliveryman. The motive is still unclear.

8. Character actor best known for him posthumous role in the Wild Bunch, he was found bound, gagged, handcuffed, blindfolded and strangled with obscenities written all over his body. Initially ruled a suicide (wtf?), it was later changed to 'accidental' (wtf?).

9. Noted actor and silent film director, his shooting murder is still officially unsolved, although the killer is widely believe to be Charlotte Shelby, mother of ingenue Mary Miles Minter (whose nightgown was found among his collection of conquest's lingerie).

10. Poltergeist actress and daughter of a writer, she broke up with an abusive boyfriend who then strangled her in the driveway of her home.

11. One of the most famous Hollywood crimes, this actress (who was expecting her first child with husband Roman Polanski) was murdered in her home along with four others.

12. Co-star of the television series "My Sister Sam", this actress was shot by a deranged stalker who got her address from the DMV records.

13. Wife of a former Heisman Trophy winner, she was stabbed on her doorstep. The killer is still out there, but her ex-husband is presumably still on a tireless search for the culprit.

14. The official cause of death of this writer/director was a heart attack, but Louella Parsons got a 'job for life' with William Randolph Hearst soon afterwards. Coincidentally enough, she was a passenger on his yacht when the death occurred.

Freebie: There are only 12 years in the Well. Two men in the list died in the same year, twice.

Bonus: This Hollywood murder has been the subject of numerous books, television shows and a few movies. The victim was an unknown who whose bisected body was found in a vacant lot. I would caution against looking this up (after answering, of course!), even if you turn off images, the details are pretty grisly.

Minus 10 points for you!

On the bright side, I don't have to proofread now. Ha!

That was during an interruption. Not a phone one, a computer freeze one. I was scared kittyless that my windows were going to close and I was going to lose all of my typing! (No, I never did manage to get these things typed ahead of time.) If that had happened, I might have just scanned my notebook pages and posted those.

Haven't played this month since I was out of the loop much of the month and only now starting to get caught up. But at least I recognize part of the bonus so I can get a point or two on the bored!

1. Silent film star who was beaten and asphyxiated (with a personal gift from Rudolph Valentino) by a pair of hustler brothers for what turned out to be $20.This one I do not know. There are seven bogie names left down below, so this must be one I have to come up with on my own, and......I can't do it!!!!   . The freebie clue says "men", I've already got two for 1959 and it seems like you wouldn't put 4 deaths within a two-year span, so I'll guess that the dude was kinda old and say it happened in 1968

Victim Well

Some very nice distractors here, Fanny!

Nick Adams-He was "The Rebel". He apparently HAD a cause.
Francis X BushmanSilent Film Actor but don't recall any muder scandal involving his demise
Pam DawberShe WAS "My Sister Sam".
Franz KlammerLuckily, he never dated Claudine Longet. It was all "Downhill" for Franz.
Barbara ParkinsWas a co-star w/Tate in "Valley of the Dolls"
Mack SennettHis sweetie, Mabel Normand, was caught up in the brouhaha over the murder in #9 above, but Mack was not a corpse in the picture.
Nancy Travis She's not an axe murderer, but she played a suspected one in a movie!
I enjoyed this one. Don't know what that says about me, but...

Thank you for the challenges this month.

I had lots of PrimeTime material left over from my last stint doing it, but it was lost in the flood a couple years back. I just haven't had the motivation neccessary to get off my butt (so to speak  ) and draw up some new material. Ditto for Lyrically Speaking. I will at some point, I reckon.

13. Wife of a former Heisman Trophy winner, she was stabbed on her doorstep. The killer is still out there, but her ex-husband is presumably still on a tireless search for the culprit.
1994, Nicole Brown Simpson

14. The official cause of death of this writer/director was a heart attack, but Louella Parsons got a 'job for life' with William Randolph Hearst soon afterwards. Coincidentally enough, she was a passenger on his yacht when the death occurred.
1935, Thomas Ince

Bonus: This Hollywood murder has been the subject of numerous books, television shows and a few movies. The victim was an unknown who whose bisected body was found in a vacant lot. I would caution against looking this up (after answering, of course!), even if you turn off images, the details are pretty grisly.

Double Bogie Timeline - September 29

"Half and Half"

1. Silent film star who was beaten and asphyxiated (with a personal gift from Rudolph Valentino) by a pair of hustler brothers for what turned out to be $20.

1968 - Ramon Novarro

People should read the answer game posts more. As some of you may know, I will put things about future games or give extra points for referencing something I put in a previous answer post just to see if you're reading them. In the Dancing with the Stars answers, I pretty much said "You need to know who Ramon Novarro is!".

2. This former Playmate and aspiring starlet's shotgun death by her estranged husband was made into a movie starring Mariel Hemingway.

1980 - Dorothy Stratten

The Hemingway movie was Star 80. I seem to remember a movie based on Peter Bogdanovich's book (the book title was The Killing of the Unicorn or something like that), I think that was the one with Jamie Lee Curtis.

3. Known as the Ice Cream Blonde, this comic actress was found in her garage, dead of carbon monoxide poisioning. Officially a suicide, the motor was off, gas was still in the tank and she had been hit in the head.

1935 - Thelma Todd

She was in a movie with Groucho Marx where he said something along the lines of "you always get the bad breaks. I could tighten them, but I'd have to keep you in the garage overnight".

4. This Olympic skier was shot by Andy Williams' ex-wife Claudine Longet. Who received a 30 day sentence, which was served after she returned from a vacation with her defense attorney (and future husband). Which, for Aspen, is pretty hardcore!

1976 - Spider Sabich

Funny coincidence. Saturday night at my mom's house she was watching whatever Court Tv is now and they had a Power and Privilege show on this. Which is hosted by Dominic Dunne, who's referenced in another clue in this game. The P&P after that involved Minot, North Dakota!

5. Former child actor of Our Gang fame, he was shot trying to collect a $50 dollar debt stemming from someone losing his dog.

1959 - Carl Switzer

1958 - Johnny Stompanato

It's been a while since I read her book, but I think she grabbed the knife because they had just moved in and that was one of the few boxes that had been unpacked.

7. Gaining fame for his role as Plato in Rebel Without a Cause, he was stabbed in an alley by a pizza deliveryman. The motive is still unclear.

1976 - Sal Mineo

8. Character actor best known for him posthumous role in the Wild Bunch, he was found bound, gagged, handcuffed, blindfolded and strangled with obscenities written all over his body. Initially ruled a suicide (wtf?), it was later changed to 'accidental' (wtf?).

1968 - Albert Dekker

9. Noted actor and silent film director, his shooting murder is still officially unsolved, although the killer is widely believe to be Charlotte Shelby, mother of ingenue Mary Miles Minter (whose nightgown was found among his collection of conquest's lingerie).

1922 - William Desmond Taylor

The Gloria Swanson character in Sunset Boulevard (Norma Desmond) is supposedly taken from Mabel Normand and William Desmond Taylor.

10. Poltergeist actress and daughter of a writer, she broke up with an abusive boyfriend who then strangled her in the driveway of her home.

1982 - Dominique Dunne

Her father is writer Dominic Dunne. The only book of his I ever read (which was before this event) was The Two Mrs. Grenvilles. A 'fictional' book based on the Anne Woodward murder case, where she shot her husband (using the Prowler Defense).

11. One of the most famous Hollywood crimes, this actress (who was expecting her first child with husband Roman Polanski) was murdered in her home along with four others.

1969 - Sharon Tate

12. Co-star of the television series "My Sister Sam", this actress was shot by a deranged stalker who got her address from the DMV records.

1989 - Rebecca Schaeffer

Her murder resulted in several anti-stalking laws being passed in California, including one that tightened up public access to DMV records.

13. Wife of a former Heisman Trophy winner, she was stabbed on her doorstep. The killer is still out there, but her ex-husband is presumably still on a tireless search for the culprit.

1994 - Nicole Brown Simpson

14. The official cause of death of this writer/director was a heart attack, but Louella Parsons got a 'job for life' with William Randolph Hearst soon afterwards. Coincidentally enough, she was a passenger on his yacht when the death occurred.

1924 - Thomas Ince

I really liked The Cat's Meow, but mostly for Eddie Izzard. Ever since Velvet Goldmine I've been a major Izzard fan.

Bonus: This Hollywood murder has been the subject of numerous books, television shows and a few movies. The victim was an unknown who whose bisected body was found in a vacant lot. I would caution against looking this up (after answering, of course!), even if you turn off images, the details are pretty grisly.

10 points: By what name is the case and victim popularly known?

The Black Dahlia

15 points: What year did it occur?

1947

25 points: What was the actual name of the victim?

Elizabeth Short

This was one of the cases that began my fascination with crime, after seeing the Lucie Arnaz tv movie.

I was surprised at the number of people who knew all or part of the bonus. I didn't realize it was still that popular, although I guess with the Ellroy movie and the Hodel book, it's had sort of a resurgence in the last couple years.

Of course he did, I don't know why I put 1924 except it was the first one and in my notebook I had Ince as the first choice.

But that shouldn't have mattered, since I didn't have to look at any notes for this one. I must have had the 20s on the brain since I was writing about my previous Novarro clue, which was in relation to Ben Hur.

Thanks for proofreading!

Stupid flood. Thank you for the compliments, I didn't know if anybody would get why the distractors were what they were.

I don't remember either of those, but I saw a documentary about it somewhere--maybe on the History Channel?

I read a book called "Hollywood Babylon", a rather grisly collection of Hollywood scandals with plenty of pictures, several not too appetizing. Once you've seen the photo of Short's body, that sight is not likely to stray too far from your memory.
