I am wore slap out

#1 Post by Ritterskoop » Sun Sep 28, 2008 11:59 pm

It was a good day, I guess, but exhausting.

The Panthers game was good, though losing both offensive tackles was unnerving. The first one (Jordan gross) lay on his front for several minutes unmoving. Then we saw his feet moving a little, then they rolled him onto his back and we could see his knees up a bit, so I knew his back was not injured (but his neck still could have been). They were bringing a stretcher and backboard but then sent them back, and brought the cart. He got up and sat on it, and we could breathe again. Turns out he was unconscious, so there's a concussion but probably not spinal damage beyond what goes with that.

The other tackle sprained an ankle in the third quarter. He cold have come back out if absolutely necessary. We were down to the last 5 OL, so that was good to know, though one of the TEs was ready to be a tackle, too.

Against a decent DL, I was impressed.

OK. All that was tiring, but then came work. I am not whining, and this may not sound like much, but here's what I did tonight:

edited a Jets story and handled the picture

race rewind (notes and observations, a bitch to code and edit)

SportsToday - this is the TV listings, running calendar, a note about a local soccer player, the top 5 website headlines, contact info, and a We Recommend item I wrote about what to watch Monday. I thought the White Sox-Tigers makeup game wasn't televised so I recommended "The Legend of Bagger Vance" on HBO. I am out on the edge with my sports TV recommendations. I got some calls when I recommended the Puppy Bowl instead of the Super Bowl. But it is far more captivating television.

NFL Notebook - all the interesting stuff that isn't in the 3-paragraph summaries

code the baseball boxes and organize them on the page

organize the NFL boxes on the page

golf scores from three tournaments

get pictures for 5-6 other stories for other people

something else I have mercifully forgotten

-------------

for final edition

Chipper Jones story

White Sox-Tigers story

update the NFL roundup with the Bears-Eagles, code the box and get it on the page

add the Boston-NYY box score from the evening game

---------

This is going to suck even more when another round of people leaves after Friday. I told the boss tonight I can do all that shit but I can't do much of it well.

Everyone else busted ass too; it's not like I was singled out. They just can't hire anyone when somebody is off work now. At least we won't have 16 baseball box scores in a day ever again - they will have to put them online next season.

OK. Thanks for listening. Monday night I can probably coast.

They are getting to the point where the is no meat left in the paper - I think they've scraped bone in a few spots. I think the comics and crosswords are the only reason we get it anymore.

Monday's paper, soon, will be a large A section with a page of biz, a page of local, and obits. Sports will have classifieds and comics. There will be no Local section nor features section.

That's the word, anyway.

They are also dropping two other features sections, I think.

It means no less work for the night people but it's easier on dayside. Bless their hearts.

The local Sunday paper (small city, as opposed to big city Boston paper) has shrunk to the point where the newpaper section (news plus Sunday house/help wanted/car ads) is barely bigger than the daily version. The weekly ad inserts, USA Weekend and comics make up a lot more than half the paper. Didn't used to be that way.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

I dunno if this will work. I thought of you when I saw today's Doonesbury, Skoop --

Spot on. Nobody has any energy left to be outraged.

I am so glad PAFBoy got out in time to get a good job at a good news outlet.

So sweet of you to be concerned for PaFBoy.

Is it okay for me to be concerned for you?

I am.

Do you have a purpose in doing what you are doing? I know it's a job and it pays the bills and if that is your current purpose, then I will listen to you differently than if there is some purpose beyond that for you to be doing all of this.

I think you get my question.

I get it. Thank you.

I see something noble in doing the dirty work, for now. I have always liked doing the support work that no one else wanted to do. In high school drama class I wanted to be the stage manager rather than being on stage. I was very proud of our section this morning when I looked at the paper.

I put in for Teach For America but did not make the first cut. I will ask around about lateral entry teaching high school English, though Mom thinks that's not the right path for me. She says public high school here will be a wasteland of kids who don't do their homework and parents who don't support them. I like the romantic idea of reaching one or two kids a year, but she knows me well, and I am strong but not tough.

I know I have been talking about this stuff a lot lately, which is not like me. But like teaching, sometimes when I formulate a way to explain something to someone else, I learn it and realize it better for myself. For instance, I did not realize until just now that I admire those of us who are still here and slogging it out. We still want readers to have a good product, even if it doesn't measure up to previous years.

My questions (who many find annoying) are always intended for people to see something they hadn't seen beofre.

Thanks for looking to see that.

I know you will find something that fulfills you and makes a difference in the world.

I also know that you will make this job be that as well.
