At the 4:30 mark of this video, you can clearly hear Senator McCain twice muttering "horse shit" while listening to Senator Obama during the debate. --Bob

Maybe he was going over his list of potential alternative fuels that he was going to talk about later in the debate?

It is neither clear what is said, nor who said it.

He was saying "Of course I would."

I heard it when I watched the debate live.

To claim he was using a scatological phrase is ridiculous.

I listened to it myself. I stand by what I heard. I linked it so that others can decide for themselves. --Bob

But you said, "you can clearly hear Senator McCain twice muttering . . ." [emphasis added]

Thus, you did not link it so others could decide for themselves.

I call bullshit.

I heard it clearly. Rather than forcing others to rely on my testimony (as you have demonstrated, "clearly" can be subjective), I linked it so that they could decide for themselves.

Don't call me a liar again. --Bob

Actually, that's quite VICE Presidential.

I heard "horseshit" because "of course she'd" didn't make sense since they weren't talking about Palin at the time.

who claims it was "of course she'd"?

It is "Of course I would"

The "of" is slightly elided into the "course" so it sounds like "acourse"

I heard "Hmpf," a couple of times. I also heard McCain start to say something and then get cut off by Obama's continuation of whatever malarky he was talking about. You are just hearing what you want to hear.

I didn't say ANYONE claimed it was "of course she'd". I was trying to think of an alternative that sounded similar that could make sense after the "whitey/ why'd he" debates. Your alternative takes the elision into account, but the ending has too many syllables for what I heard and omits the "sh" sound I did hear.

That's all.

I forget if the Big Dick said "Fuck you!" or "Fuck off!" to Sen Leahy.

Surely one of the bored Kool-Aid drinkers will know.

Well, maybe he was channeling his good friend, Ted kennedy, and it came out "acoursh I would."

It's impossible to tell what he said. And if he said "horseshit," more power to him. It's about time.

I'm surprised no one has picked up on McCain's dig at Obama's "Vero Possumus" seal ("I don't even have a seal yet"). No doubt McCain thought it would be an "I can't believe I'm losing to this guy" moment.

It's not clear. It's like whatsername's "equipment malfunction." Some sound brainiac could probably isolate it and tell us exactly what it is. And even if was an expletive, so what? The only way I can see anybody making hay out of this is if they want to point up how one of the candidates doesn't recognize the dangers of a national live mike. Heck, we had a President who didn't recognize the dangers of his own sound system, 18.5 minute gap and all.

Agreed.

More than likely, Obama was saying something like horse sh*t. Most of what comes outta his mouth is horse sh*t. At least McCain was honest.

I don't know what he said.

But if he DID say 'horseshit' then by that alone he stated more truth than his opponent.

Sorry, it's clear who said it. You can see McCain say something at 4:31 and the same voice says it again at 4:33.

It's less clear what's being said. Could be "horseshit", could also be "of course I should".

C'mon. You heard "horseshit" because someone told you he said it and you were looking for it. That's different from being certain, and it's miles from him saying it clearly.

There's no need to be spreading rumors or alleging things you suspect but can't prove.

I prefer Occam's Razor. I heard "horse shit" (on a fairly good sound system) because he said "horse shit." --Bob

I distinctly heard a hard "c" sound before the "orse" sound at least once. So while I couldn't say for certain what he said ("Of course you should"?), I'm pretty sure it wasn't "Horse shit." JHMO, of course.

And coming up next on The Discovery Channel: The acoustics and proper grammar of "horseshit."
