I'm also interested in finding out whether your theories about Ogi's methods to being an expert are similar to my own.
I'm trying to catch up on things, so I'll try to make this brief. For me, the top three most worthwhile performances I saw were:
David Byrne (I've never seen him before. The music was good and the dancers added visual interest.)
John Fogerty (Would probably be my #1 pick if I hadn't already seen him twice before.)
Robert Plant & Allison Krauss (I've seen them separately, but not together.)
I'm sure some would say my choices were predictable for an old fogy, which is probably true. There were lots of newer acts that have varying levels of fame. I liked some of them, and others just seemed like annoying noise. There were always several stages going at once, with the biggest name acts competing against each other, so people had to make a lot of tough choices.
Others that made a favorable impression on me include:
Gnarls Barkely, Vampire Weekend, Gogol Bordello, Manu Chao, Jamie Lidell, Jakob Dylan, Xavier Rudd, Tegan and Sara.
A few that I didn't care for:
The Mars Volta, Erykah Badu, Silversun Pickups, The Raconteurs, Kevin Fowler, Foo Fighters.
In several cases I just heard a song or two while walking between other stages. There were other bands I would have liked to see, but I couldn't be two places at once. I planned to see 30 minutes of Beck after Robert Plant, but he apparently quit early, so I missed him. Other than that exception, the shows ran almost to the exact minute that they showed on the schedule grid.
I wore a pedometer this weekend to see how far I walked. In the three days, I put in almost 40,000 steps, which in my case is about 23 miles. Maybe a third of that was walking to and from the venue.
I'll try to get back to you on the Ogi thing.
