Here's one match. John Gielgud was in Laurence Olivier's Richard III.

Toshiro Mifune also did Ran, based on King Lear. I'm not sure who his co-stars were in that.

And we should have gotten this earlier as well. Olivier got an Oscar nomination for playing Othello, with Maggie Smith as Desdemona.

Yup. And it's a straight Shakespeare adaptation, not a modernization.
