#5. "Mangy Harry"

Debuted: 7/4/12

Image

I rarely set out to do an avatar and have the result completely outdo what I had imagined. The foreshortened gun trick is a difficult enough one to pull off even in traditional media, let alone in Paint with a little 200X200 pixel square to fit your image into. Yet ES looks so badass aiming that weapon at poor Confessor's head after he dared to ask whether a pedestrian had a right to "stand his ground" under Texas law if he felt his life was in immediate danger from moving vehicle. Welcome to Texas, punk, and don't mess with the squirrels! Maybe this avatar would have won had Marley not pointed out the poor synchronization between the sun angle and the car radio clock....

Yes, of course 11:11 is de rigueur as the Bored time for all ES avatars. I'm sorry if the limitations of the artist's palette and my own keen eye for astronomical details may have ruined the chances for this avatar to win the top honors.

But then, I'm still supporting the "Save Our Bored" avatar, even if beast has already eliminated it from the running.

There's no shame in supporting a loser... Sprots has been doing it since the very first countdown....

#4. "The Miseducation of Angel Squirrel"

Debuted: 4/20/12

Image

4:20 has always been traditional toke 'em if you got 'em time, so April 20th has kind of become associated with marijuana use as well. To "celebrate" the day, I made of this avatar of Angel once again getting unwittingly tangled up in another of MBRS's wild adventures that may be a bit more than she had asked for. The bong on the table may be a hint as to why Angel looks a bit stoned, and suddenly hungry for Ruffles. MBRS, perhaps a bit more used to this type of recreation, mellows out on the couch next to her previously innocent friend. As much as I like this avatar on its visual qualities alone, my favorite thing about it might actually be the title Fanny gave it... a play off of the debut album of hip hop's Lauryn Hill. Everyone will be glad to know that Angel did survive this experience MBRS dragged her into, and we hear she is suddenly begging to accompany ES on his visits to Colorado...

If this had been a few days earlier, I would have laffed and laffed when my grandma busted out the Ruffles on Christmas.....

I took my mom to the doctor yesterday and was pointing out the green crosses because my sister and I tried to explain them to her a while back and she claimed to have never seen any before. It soon became a game of "Spot the Pot" as she started to pick them out.

A bunch of new ones have cropped up in the past month. I don't know if that's because of the legalization or not, but I'd be happy if the hope I shared at the time (that MM proprietors would stop becoming targets and having to go underground) is starting to become reality.
It's the Final Countdown.....

#3. "The Unicorn Wrangler"

Debuted: 3/9/12

Erin, Rainbow Donkey, and donuts. How could the result be anything but absolutely adorable? This avatar, which sprung to life thanks to this thread, captures the essence of Erin as relayed to the Bored via her mother Mini. Just pulling off Rainbow Donkey in full trot without it looking like garbage was good enough to put this avatar in elite company. Like many of my other best avatars, this one also found its way to the shop. If you happen to spot an orange kitty riding atop a rainbow steed with a horn full of donuts, be sure to flag her down and request one of her baked goods.... and don't forget to leave a tip....

Here's what I wrote in that thread:

That is a beeYOOtifull avatar.

But it cannot beat Sunchine. It will win in second place.

I think LB put this in third place instead of #1, after Sunchine went out, just to show he never listens to me.

You give yourself faaaaaar too much credit, as usual.

You and mini got this one up to #3.... it was your Crawlspace Fanny this year. While I have not yet made up my own personal Top 20, this one would probably chime in somewhere in the bottom half of the Top 10. It wouldn't be in my Top 5....

It is most definitely NOT my personal Top 20.... it is a mixture of my favorites, plus all those other fun factors you like to quote to me all rolled together for the "official" Top 20. Last year after the countdown, at Fanny's request, I posted my Top 20 based solely on my favorites. It was quite a bit different than the official version, and this year's would be the same way...

#2. "Hurricane Sandy"

Debuted: 10/26/12

Image

Normally for an avatar to reach a spot this high on the countdown, it had to have received plenty of positive BB reaction, or at least a few memorable replies. This avatar received minimal response (it was praised when I posted it on my blog), yet it made it to #2, and I damn near put it at #1 for one reason.... it is the best avatar I have ever drawn, period. My opinion, yes, but I absolutely love the way this came out, and that I pulled it off with a character I almost never use anymore, yet who predates even ES, makes it all the better for me. The character is Sandy, and of course it was my avatar homage to the hurricane turned superstorm that wreaked havoc on the east coast just prior to Halloween this year. Sandy makes one wickedly mean hurricane goddess here, and there are too many wonderful effects in this little image to even list here, though I am most happy with the swelling waves. I kept Sandy up an entire week, and it was well deserved.... she damn near pulled off the upset of the year and won this countdown....

#1. "The Scream"

Debuted: 5/3/12

Image

One of the things I truly miss about the early days of creating these avatars is the wonderful reactions and comments they used to often get when I first uploaded them. That seems to have largely become a thing of the past, whether due to apathy, my schtick becoming tired, or just the general population rot we've had here the last year or so. Most of my avatars this year didn't receive much more than perhaps a token "Found it!" and a Sprots "it will/will not win".

This one was a notable exception... and that's why it was a virtual lock from the day it was posted to take the #1 spot.

A summary of some of the comments on this one:

"Well done, ES! This exploration of another style is your best since you tried your hand at Klimt Not only was the artistic style captured well, but the thematic interpretation was perfect! I mean, if there is anything here on the Bored that would elicit such a scream, this is it." - Marley

"It will not win. Munch was a hack and a bit of a hot mess. Well, now that I think about it......." - Fanny

"Munch may be a hack but ES ROCKS THE CRAYOLAS!!!!!!!!! The SCREAM! Le SCREAM! C'est Scream!!! etc. '70's music yada yada yada. This is my official affirmation for this one." - Beebs

"Your interpretation of the Srceam [sic] was great. It is nice to see you trying alternative styles. Very creative." - geoffil

"I think it's better than the original, actually!" - mini

"Love your new avatar. is that the face you made when you found out you were in seat 9 :D" - Weasel

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THAT IS HORRIFYING!!!!!!!!!!

IT WILL NOT WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
" - Sprots

I didn't even give the story behind this one, because it doesn't matter. This is why it won.

Signed, sealed, delivered.... Number one.

And this is why I continue to defy Sprots and create these wonderful plays this long-running gag with ES.... because they are entertaining, and that is the main reason I draw these ES avatars in the first place. Not to satisfy myself, or to yank Sprots' ponytail, but to help make this a more pleasant place to hang around. Let's hope we can do this again next year.... thanks for watching the 2012 ES Avatar Countdown!

Well, suprahz, suprahz, suprahz....

Generally I have your picks pretty much figured by the time you hit the top five, but you totally fooled me this year! I'd completely forgotten about this one. So I guess you already know where it landed on The Correct 2012 ESAC.....ha!

Damn! I really can't believe you let this one slip by you....

I'll try to post my personal one tomorrow, and maybe attempt to predict where our respective rankings may or may not intersect...

The Scream was absolutely and positively the right choice to be selected as the top avatar for 2012!

I have to admit, I was unbelievably and unnecessarily giddy last night when I saw you posted your #1 prediction. I think other than Sprots' "win" posts, that's the first time anyone had ever offered a prediction at what the top spot was going to be.....
