Tennis Guy posted an article about a man who reached the 40 gallon mark for blood donation. Sprots made the mistake of saying she was working on her 16th gallon donated. That just opened up the door for ES to come up with this little avatar, one which not only got the usual reaction from Sprots, but had the doubly wonderful effect of actually being called out by several people on the Bored as really cute. And the key was in something I added merely as an afterthought..... the wave. It always amazes me what things people notice, both good and bad, in my drawings that I really didn't give much thought to... and this may be my favorite one of those little unexpected details. Fanny provided the line that became this avatar's title, and it was even used for the edition title of the rankings that week....

lb13
Whew!! I did not want this to be #1, but feared it. As LB points out, reader reaction was favorable and widespread (except for yours truly, of course).

I'm safe now, this is the highest I'll be.

Thanks, LB!

You appeared in a LOT of avatars, so don't be so sure you're out of the woods yet.......

lb13
Nope, I'm confident. Based on your three stated criteria -- quality, BB reaction, and significance -- plasma scored the highest.

Nope, my sense of security is not false. I have LB in writing by virtue of his stated criteria that #5 is the highest I get.

Many of these (squirrel) migrations were probably caused by food shortages as well as habitat overcrowding. We solved that for them. We not only reduced their habitat, we reduced the whole species by about 90%. The least we can do now is share a little birdseed with them.

You know Sprots, the ES avatar based on your current one is a really cute one. I know you may not agree, but I think so.

I hope it doesn't make LB move it up in the rankings.....

Don't worry about any rankings manipulation.... I set the order before I posted #13, and I couldn't live with myself if I altered the order afterwards (Fanny would understand that if nobody else).....

I'm still surprised I only had Plasma Partner at #5 and the Hawaiian avatar so high. Not that they aren't two of my favorites obviously, but I was expecting Hawaiian ES to be next on my list Sunday morning, and then Monday morning....

I was quoting Robert Sheckley's classic line. If memory serves, he applied it to himself. --Bob

I've never heard that attributed to Sheckley. Alfred Hitchcock said that in an intro to his "Presents" series though. Stephen King has also used it.

#2: "The Rooftop Dinner"

Debuted: 8/21/09

Image

Odyssey's tenure as my avatar maven during Hooly's absence lasted a grand total of only three avatars. This was the final of those three, one of the best I have drawn, and the sole reason I currently have a cat named Ody (Well, I'd still have the cat, but who knows what he would have been named). Poor Odyssey did not have much luck in trying to refine ES, but she did get him to agree to not have that dinner he wanted with her at Mickey Dee's and instead enjoy it on the roof. The result was this avatar, which I believe was also my first ever nighttime avatar. As for Ody, well, as much as I couldn't get over his resemblance to the blue haired feline character I created for Odyssey, it was when Ody would roll on his back and reveal his pink paw pads that cinched it in my mind. All I could think of was this avatar I had made a month earlier......

Well you have now seen #13 through 2...... and I'm sure the anticipation over what I have chosen for #1 will consume your day. We'll find out in about 24 hours...............

Well, I did guess right about this one.

I was sure it would make the count down.

I even went and looked at the others to refresh my memory.

I don't know which is number one though. Maybe I will have to look again later.

Oh my goodness, I'm surprised!

The one I thought would be #1 is #2. Could that mean that the one I picked that SHOULD be #1 will actually be #1? That never happens.....

If what I thought SHOULD be #1 isn't even in the top 13, then there will just be no hope for you..... But I really can't imagine any way that it couldn't be...... we'll see if your reasoning behind it is the same as mine.

Hooray for the rooftop dinner!! I was honored and delighted to see this lovely scene the first time, and am pleased it is so high in the countdown now. It is, of course, my #1. How could anyone look at this drawing and fail to see that ES is a romantic at heart?

#1: "Matias Loves ES!"

Debuted: 11/1/09

So you've been following the countdown for 2 weeks now and wondered why the hell there were no Matias avatars in it yet. Well, I probably could have easily had all five Matias avatars I did in the Top 10, but in fairness to everything else, I merely chose the best one, and the one I think the Bored liked the best, and this was definitely the one. The fourth of my five Matias avatars, and one of two whose ideas were PM'ed to me by ES's fans. This one came courtesy of Holly (that's Second Chance for those of you who don't pay attention!), who thought Sprots' new avatar of Matias looking all happy in the snow was just begging for a picture of ES in his arms getting ready to plant a big ol' kiss on him. ES was even kind enough to keep him warm by wrapping his bushy tail around Matias. It sure seems to have made Matias happy, and Sprots was practically ecstatic!

Congrats ES and Matias for getting the number one slot! You two may now ride off into the sunset together......
