I wonder how the campaign intended to reuse the empty water bottles, name tags and crumpled paper that were being stored with the flags?
I can say that the Green Team was putting all recyclables/reusables in the same bags at all the venues for sorting later. That probably isn't right in this case because of the name tags, but the water bottles and crumpled paper fit with how they'd been doing it earlier in the week.

I thought it was a little odd to put plastic and paper together, but a Green Teamer assured me it was supposed to work that way.

I heard that all of the leftover flags were saved in protective bags so they could be wrapped around New Testaments and used as Sunday newspaper inserts. It's a shame that someone removed the flags, and most subscribers received only the Good News, but not Old Glory.

"We screwed up, and we feel terrible about it. Nobody meant for it to happen, but in all of the confusion and chaos that accompany any political convention, several thousand flags were put into garbage bags during the post-convention clean-up. They were stored in the garbage bags because that is what we had readily available, and, frankly, everybody was tired and wanted to go home. We meant to reuse those flags, but they never made it to the trucks that would have taken them to another venue where they would have been waved proudly. Instead, the bags with the flags were left uncomfortably close to the the trash dumpsters. I can't blame anybody for misunderstanding our intentions. I am greatly annoyed with whoever accused others of stealing those flags from storage, because I recognize that we inadvertantly left ourselves open to that misunderstanding. Unfortunately, I have no way to discipline that campaign volunteer, whoever he or she may be, because the accuser misspoke anonymously. I apologize to all those people who were accused of theft."

Now that may not be the whole truth, either, but it would permit some face-saving for the campaign while maintaining that the party supports honesty in all things.

It's not about whatever was intended for the flags, it's the apparent lie, which nobody seems to accept except the True Believers.
I know nothing about any of this except what I've read here just now, without checking the links.

For what it's worth, I give silver-c a resounding REC! here.

This gets a big-time ICM! And a Double-Rec (whatever that is).

Very rich.

I wondered what the story of your avatar was, tmittss.

Did anyone check to see where all those US flags were manufactured?
I believe suitguy's avatar is a polar bear in the Tokyo Zoo. I heard this morning that in order to conserve water the bears' pool wasn't being cleaned as often; the result was algae that got onto the bears' fur and is very difficult to wash out. (Source: NPR)

I don't buy the "stored" spin. When we hear from the person who was supposed to pick up the flags, and they explain why the flags were there for a week, I will acknowledge my mistake.

As someone pointed out if you leave anything around after a trade show, it gonna get dumped.

And this gets under my skin a bit. I can't stand to see a flag on the ground. I've picked up a lot of those broken off car flags lying along the road. When they find me run over along the road, look for the flag.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
