Watching pitchers bat was like watching the backup catcher pitch the last inning of a blowout.
Watching pitchers bat led to "one of the great moments in the history of baseball."
The Mets were part of one of the most infamous moments in Atlanta Braves history on July 4, 1985, a game that has forever since been known as the "Rick Camp game." The Mets beat the Braves 16-13 in 19 innings but that's just part of the story. Back then, the Braves traditionally played at home on July 4 night and scheduled a big fireworks show after the game. So they had a good crowd, even though the team was would finish 30 games below .500 that season. They had two lengthy rain delays, and the Mets scored in the top of the 18th inning to take an 11-10 lead. The Braves had no position players left, so relief pitcher Rick Camp batted for himself in the bottom of the 18th and hit a home run to tie the game. Then the Mets scored five runs off Camp in the 19th to win the game. Ironically, Camp struck out to end the game at almost 4:00 and they proceeded with the fireworks show afterwards for those fans who remained.

And also in the pitchers hitting home runs trivia - Hall of Fame pitcher Hoyt Wilhelm homered in his very first big league at bat as a 29-year old rookie and never hit another one in 492 more career at bats.

Having the Dodgers play the Padres 7 times in 11 days/7 games out of 10... Gee, what could go wrong? Too many HBP and Doc vs. Shildt.

Ohtani started his second game and pitched a scoreless inning with two Ks.

Charlie Furbush was once included in a trade that had Doug Fister going the other way....

Making it the Fister-Furbush trade....

Nostalgic shoutout to former Giants reliever Merkin Valdez, who earned the awesome Fanny nickname "Pubes," and taught me that there is such a thing as a pubic wig... which probably isn't even the most disturbing thing I ever learned from chat back in its day...

So much for Dicky Lovelady, who got the ever popular "designated for assignment" today....

And this tidbit:

Lovelady, 29, was just signed a couple of days ago. There was an amusing bit of confusion about his name when the Mets announced him as “Dicky” Lovelady. Per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the lefty does go by “Dicky” during casual interactions but will be referred to as “Richard” in official settings such as in print and on scoreboards.

What in the name of Dickie Thon is that all about? If the guy goes by Dicky, then he should be presented as Dicky!!!

I can't recall a day when there's been such a bizarre mix of good and bad pitching (or hitting if you want to look at it the other way) as yesterday.

On the one hand: two one-hitters, four shutouts, and four other games in which the losing team only scored one run.

On the other hand: a three-HR game, and 11 teams scoring 8 or more runs in the game (three of those teams lost their games).

The most bizarre result was Tampa-Baltimore. Tampa got off to a 6-0 lead but lost the game 22-8. That's the largest margin of victory ever in which the losing team led by six or more runs.

Not baseball, but college football:
Oregon finally lands 2026 QB in three-star Bryson Beaver
A bit of context here. Oregon's team nickname is the Ducks, but arch-rival Oregon State is the Beavers. I'm not sure how the Ducks snagged a Beaver away from the Beavers.

And Dicky has already re-signed with the Mets on a Major League deal. He'll probably be DFA'ed again in a few days....

The roster churn in baseball these days is just unreal...

Ohio Bobcats have a lineman named Parker Titsworth.

Uniform number 69, of course.

Unless he's a midget, he's doing it wrong...
