I said basically the same thing to my wife during this!cindy.wellman wrote:I asked dh last night when David Cook was singing with ZZ Top, "I wonder if any of these contestants would have believed a year ago that they would be performing with these musicians"Ritterskoop wrote:I want Brooke and CSN. I feel very lucky that I downloaded the songs I wanted every week.
Also smart of them not to pair Jason with anyone on "Hallelujah" - it's not really set up to duet. At first I did think k. d. lang might join him - her version is as excellent in its way as jeff Buckley's.
"6 months ago I was tending bar. Now I'm singing with ZZ Freakin' Top!!!"
How cool for them!
If that were me, like 28 years ago, and I were up therwe with, let's say Cheap Trick (our model band back in my day) I'd be wetting myself.
I thought that was probably the most entertaining Finale I've seen since I started watching in the Bo/Carrie season. Really, I think they all did themselves fairly proud last night. I don't think my sweet rock-n-roll nurse Amanda was having a particularly good time during the Donna Summer medley (she looked like she was concentrating hard just to not fall down during the choreography), but they were all in pretty good voice. Little David stepped out of the box and did some tuneage with a bit more bite than his normal mellow pop balladry and I thought he sounded very good. His duet with Cookie on "Hero" I quite liked. Perhaps if Archie can escape from underneath his dad's iron thumb, he may have a successful recording career after all, and not be sentenced to a life on The Disney Channel followed by a Lindsey Lohan trajectory. I hope so. There IS some talent there, it just needs the proper guidance.
Other observations:
I'm no Mr. Blackwell, but Jordan Sparks' dress was..ummm..non-flattering.
Cracked up on the Guitar Hero commercials and the Gladys Knight & her new Pips bit, not so much on the Mike Myers "Love Guru" pimpage (that movie looks terrifically unfunny), although I laughed at him playing "Sitar Hero".
I had said that they would be missing out on a classic moment if they didn't bring back Reynaldo to sing "I Am Your Brother" with full orchestra and backing chorus. We got a marching band to accompany him instead, which was just as amusing. I liked that they limited the nod to the trainwrecks to just one segment.
I felt bad for Carrie Underwood that she forgot her pants and then had to go out and perform in front of the world. How embarrassing for her. Unless she thought that SHE was there to do a "Guitar Hero" commercial, too..
George Michael may not have been in perfect voice, but he sounded good enough not to have brought it to everyone's attention that he had a cold. Terribly unprofessional to make excuses. Hell, even I learned long ago that you weren't supposed to do that. And like I said, he didn't even sound that bad. I wouldn't have known it if he hadn't brought attention to it. I just chalked up his less than 100% accuracy to that fact that he hasn't sung in public for a long time.
I liked Cookie's choice for original song on Tuesday night, when the contestants got to pick from the 10 original song finalists. I can still hear the hooky chorus of "Dream Big" in my head. I couldn't even remember the NAME of the song he sang at the end of the show last night, let alone remember the melody. All I remember was that it was the typical treacly generic "this is my moment in the sun" blah dreck that the Idol bigwigs always choose for the first single. The lyrics never change, they all sound the same, and this is the one reason it may not have been a good thing for Cook to have won this thing. If this is the stuff they're gonna force him to record, they'll end his career before it starts. If they had to pick a song from the 10 finalists, "Dream Big" would've been a better choice than "This is My Moment Like This To Make You Proud Now" or whatever the heck that song last night was called. "Dream Big" has the "my moment to shine" lyrics they can't seem to do without, but at least it has SOME semblence of an edge and a memorable chorus. Good luck dealing with the hacks controlling your career, David...
All in all, it was a pretty entertaining two hours.
