I thought about using Frederick Law Olmstead, but I felt that name may have given away the Tangredi too easily.Weyoun wrote:Olmstead - so look for Frederick law - had the Sikorsky helicopter one.
There is an Olmstead in this game... just not that one.

Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
Working backwards (which I think we'll have to do on some of these), I was able to figure this one out. It's a nautical flag for the letter N, which goes with Bernie Cullen (N being the letter on airplane serial numbers).NellyLunatic1980 wrote: 70. A flag that has a 4x4 grid of alternating white and blue squares would represent this.

Again, working backward, which I think is the only way to solve some of these clues, this is PADDINGTON BEAR.smilergrogan wrote: 75. In 1984, an Australian politician had to resign from Parliament when he was caught importing this toy without paying duty. CABBAGE PATCH KID? RUBIK'S CUBE?
I have to say that I'm really delighted with this puzzle. This is a terrific idea Nelly, and I'm really amazed you were able to come up with all these clues pointing to the people from the show.

Jeff Gross's $500,000 question was the third most abundant gas in the atmosphere (argon). His million-dollar question was the etymology of tabby (named after a neighborhood in Baghdad).
Ogi's million-dollar question was about the ship absent from the Boston Tea Party (I think it was the Eleanor).
The McNallys' million-dollar question was the club Alan Shepard used on the moon (I think a 5 iron).
Steve Perry is a $500,000 winner. His million-dollar question was about Carol Brady's maiden name (Tyler).
Lyn Payne's million-dollar question was the country of the ambassador that provoked Krushchev's shoe-banging incident (the Philippines). Her transcript thread should be here, so we can look up her half-million dollar question also. --Bob

Thanks. You'll be surprised at some of the names that I had to look up in order to make these 48 connections possible. I'm a little disappointed, though, that I couldn't find anybody even remotely famous named Shutterly or Toutant or Ogas.silverscreenselect wrote:I have to say that I'm really delighted with this puzzle. Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
The way it looks, the last question actually answered by a contestant, in your case the Java Man is the one that makes its way into this puzzle. Frank is in there because of the Mailer question he missed. Of course, it just might be what Nelly considered the most memorable (or the one for which he could come up with clues) question from the stack.Weyoun wrote:Please, let's not dwell on Mrs. Brady unless absolutely necessary!
I'm wondering if Katy Knudsen, Llama Man, Rudy Reber, and other famous losers are in here.
And I wonder if any of the clues refer to the film resume of Bart Tangredi.

There is one key piece of the Tangredi that everybody is missing thus far, although one person earlier seems to be steering in the right direction of it.

I agree, since some answers to $1 million questions, like Le Duc Tho, the Soundabout and Chekhov being a doctor aren't here.
Mike Menz's 500k was on the Rub al Khali I think.

One of the two NYC guy referred to back to back has to be Carlo Gambino.
I recall a lady having a high value question on Rapa Nui.
Angelfire names its programs after elements. My guess it is Argon and that Ghiorso named an element in honor f his countryman.
Could the game show guy be Jim Perry? The fb player the Fridge?

I recall a question about who the Eroica was dedicated to - Napoleon - and one asking what was the first CD supposed to be long enough to play. Both make me wonder if the Cologne guy is Beethoven.
Think Atari is usually translated as Ready to attack but I think Hit the target works. I also recall a high value question on it's meaning.

Consolidation following extensive Googling. Even more extensive wading through transcripts will be required to complete the puzzle. Nelly, do you know of a comprehensive list of contestants and their questions for both all versions of the show?
Identify the 109 people, places, things, titles, and fictional characters below.
Arrange them into 47 trios and 1 quartet based on a Tangredi, or hidden principle, that you must discover for yourself. 21 answers will be used twice, 6 answers will be used three times, and 1 answer will be used four times.

Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
The way question 56 reads, Atari isn't the answer. It refers to the game that was released in 1971 that failed, following which the founders eventually formed Atari. Based on wikipedia, this is a game Nolan Bushnell developed for bars and arcades called COMPUTER SPACE.smilergrogan wrote: 56. It was released by Nutting Associates in November 1971. Even though it was a financial failure, just a few months later, its two creators formed a successful company whose name is Japanese for “hit the target”.
SUZUKI?
67. In the film “Anchorman”, Ron Burgundy claimed that he was friends with this football legend to try to impress a woman that he met at a party.
William "Refrigerator" Perry played at Clemson in the early 1980s and with the Bears from 1985 on. Anchorman is set in the 1970s so iw would be very doubtful Burgundy would have claimed to know the Fridge. It's more likely to be some San Diego Charger of the era like Dan Fouts.
And I don't think it's Nelly's responsibility to get us a list of questions or transcripts. There should be other people on the Bored who have kept that sort of information.

I don't know which question you are looking for for Bob-O (The last one he got right or last one he walked from), but his 2.5 million dollar question he walked away from dealt with Machus Red Fox restaurant, the last place Jimmy Hoffa was seen alive. I only remember that because it is the highest valued question asked in WWTBAM history, and I used it (in reverse form) in a QoD contest 3 years prior.....

Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
Only have time for two quick lookups.
Moe Cain's 500K question was about Henry Ford.
Justin Gambino's 500K question was about the TV show Head of the Class, which I'd guess is the ABC series that I originally thought might have been the Brady Bunch.

I'm pretty sure I remember a high value question about Atari, so I'm guessing that was the intended answer.silverscreenselect wrote:The way question 56 reads, Atari isn't the answer. I didn't say it was his responsibility. But as a practical matter, there's no way the puzzle will get finished unless somebody has access to a complete list of contestants. I have a complete list (without questions) for Aug.99 - Aug. 01, and I earlier noted a website with transcripts from June 00 through the 4th syndicated season. On here the transcripts only go back to when this site started in late 07 (I think). I don't know where there are transcripts for Super Millionaire.silverscreenselect wrote:And I don't think it's Nelly's responsibility to get us a list of questions or transcripts. Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
Excellent job so far, everybody!
I will tell you that one answer up there with a question mark is correct.
Three of your definite answers are wrong.
Two answers are partially correct. One name still needs a nickname to go with the first and last name. One other answer needs to be longer.
One of your partials will not be used in this game.

Re: Time for a Nelly Game!
There is a link below my avatar which leads you to my WWTBAM page. In the statistics link, you can find lists of every single contestant and their airdate(s). That should help you determine which transcripts to look for here or here.smilergrogan wrote:I didn't say it was his responsibility. There's a site that has a bunch of WWTBAM answers but no questions. It may help a little bit. That site is here.
An old friend of mine, Tim Connolly, has most of the transcripts from August 1999 to February 2000. His website still exists here.
Almost every syndie transcript can be found on the WWTBAM test page that 15QA has in the Transcripts Forum of the Bored.
