Former Presidential candidate (and Atlanta talk show host) Herman Cain has been hospitalized with the coronavirus. He attended the Trump rally in Tulsa two weeks ago. The question is did he catch the virus there or did he just pass it on to some of the other people in the photo:

Sports related developments:

-- To the surprise of absolutely no one, MLB has officially canceled the 2020 All Star game scheduled for Los Angeles. LA will instead host the 2022 game. (Next year the game will be played in Atlanta.)

-- The NFL has shortened the preseason from four games to two. The NFLPA wats the remaining preseason games to be canceled as well.

-- Lafayette, an FCS (formerly 1-AA) school, has backed out of its September game against Navy because of Patriot League prohibitions against flying. Other conference games may be cancelled as a result. Navy has already rescheduled its game against Notre Dame, formerly set for Ireland, which will instead be played at the Naval Academy Labor Day Weekend. Navy is looking for an opponent to replace Lafayette.

On a similar sports-related subject, data from the German Bundeslige soccer league shows that the normal home-team advantage has largely disappeared in games played in empty stadiums. Home teams had won 43% of games played in full stadiums, but only 33% in empty stadiums. Even the officiating seems affected. Home teams were penalized more for fouls in empty stadiums than in full stadiums.

In MLB, at least, the home team can still plan its lineup to take advantage of the layout of its home stadium (especially for places like Fenway Park and Wrigley Field). But it will be interesting to see just what college football is like in front of 80-100,000 empty seats for a big conference game. If there are big conference games.

The Ivy League has cancelled all fall sports, including football. They are still floating the possibility of playing some games in the spring. Traditionally, Ivy League schools only play non-conference football games against teams with similar approaches to sports (like the Patriot League), so major-college schedules will probably not be affected by this decision. However, if other FCS conferences do the the same thing, especially those in the south, then a number of FBS schools could have one or two vacant spots on their schedule.

The Big Ten has announced that it will play a "conference-only" schedule in fall sports, including football, which means cancelling many September football games against other Power5 teams. The Big Ten currently plays nine conference games and three non-conference games each year. The exact schedule will be released later. The most likely model is a ten-game conference schedule (there are 14 teams in the Big Ten). Assuming they eliminate off-weeks, a ten-game schedule could begin the last weekend in September and finish Thanksgiving weekend.

The ACC has also announced that it is delaying all fall sports competition until September 1. That won't affect any football games, but it will affect non-conference soccer, field, hockey, and volleyball, among others.

The Pac-12 has also announced that it is going to a conference-only football schedule, with the opening date to be determined. Even that may be questionable since two Pac 12 schools (UCLA, Southern Cal) are in Los Angeles and two more (Arizona, Arizona State) in Arizona. Among the games canceled was Southern Cal vs. Alabama in Dallas on September 5. Both Southern Cal and Stanford play Notre Dame (which also had a game against Wisconsin canceled as well).

The ACC and Big 12 say they will make a decision in late July on football schedules. There are four Big 12 schools in Texas and two in Oklahoma, while there are two ACC schools in Florida and six more in Georgia and the Carolinas.

The NHL plans to resume with expanded playoffs (no more regular season games) beginning August 1. Each team will play one exhibition game before beginning the playoffs. There will be 12 teams from each conference, with Eastern conference games in Toronto and Western conference games from Edmonton. Three games will be played each day in each city with start times depending on the end time of the preceding game. The 5-12 seeds will play a best of five playoff while the top four seeds in each conference will play a round robin schedule to determine the 1-4 seeding in the second round. The elimination playoff games will be played with sudden-death overtime, while the round robin games will be played under regular season scoring rules.

After the first round, all remaining series will be best of seven. The matchups in each round will be reseeded by record. The conference finals and championship finals will be played in Edmonton and the players' families will be allowed to attend those games. Otherwise, no fans, but the "home" team will have various cheers pumped in on the sound system as at international soccer matches.

The Patriot League has also canceled all fall sports. Members are American University, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lehigh, Lafayette, and Loyola of Maryland. Army and Navy are also Patriot League members for all sports except football and will make their own decisions regarding all cancellations.

Yep, that Woolery guy...

John Lennon sang it best -- "Instant karma's gonna get you..." That was almost as quick as the Georgia football announcer making fun of the pronunciation of an Alabama player's name -- and four seconds later, Georgia lost.

But of course, he now says that he never said the virus wasn't real. I wonder what what "everyone is lying" means, then?

Maybe he's been injecting Blue Emu?

There may or may not be a Rose Bowl next New Year's Day, but there won't be a Rose Bowl Parade. It was canceled today. The NCAA also announced that it was relaxing bowl eligibility rules to allow teams to count two games against FCS opponents towards the six needed for bowl eligibility. With at least two conferences going to a limited football schedule this year, there may not be enough FBS schools available to fill all the bowl slots, assuming that all the bowl games are still played.

The MEAC has become the latest FCS conference to suspend fall sports. Its football members include Bethune-Cookman, Delaware State. Florida A&M, Howard, Morgan State, Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, and South Carolina State. MEAC schools play a number of non-conference games against FBS teams, including ACC members. Also suspended is the postseason Celebration Bowl in Atlanta against the champion of the SWAC (neither the MEAC nor the SWAC send teams to the FCS playoffs).

The Big East (which does not play football) canceled its fall sports schedule today as well, including cross-country, field hockey, soccer, and volleyball.

This time it's the Colonial Athletic Association, one of the higher end FCS conferences, that has canceled its fall sports programs. Members include James Madison, Richmond, and William & Mary.

The Toronto Blue Jays will not be playing their regular season games in Canada. The Canadian government refused to allow the Blue Jays and visiting teams back and cross the border multiple times over the next two months. No replacement site has been set yet. The Jays' AAA affiliate is in Buffalo, NY. The Jays open their season on the road in Tampa Bay on July 24, with their "home opener" scheduled for July 29 against Washington.

A good friend of mine, Wayne Williams, passed away last night from Covid 19. He was a retired teacher and principal who got bored with retirement and became a flight attendant for a while and then returned and worked as a part-time tutor in our school district. He was also very active in the church and in our community theater group, which he served on the board of. A kinder, gentler soul I have never met.
