I'm driving myself crazy. I know the phone game is my best -- if not only -- hope of ever getting into the hot seat. I'm just too MAWGish for the audition process (oh, if they come back to Boston and I'm able to give it a try, I will; but I'm not holding my breath). But I'm tripping all over myself here.

Because (1) I'm a newbie, (2) this is a high traffic thread, and (3) MV just used it in his post, I'll ask. I get the general idea of what a MAWG is (I assume white, male lawyer-type person), but what do the letters stand for?

And, for that matter, what is Nihil Obstat?

Thanks!

Middle-Aged White Guy. Nothing lawyer-type about me (I'm an underemployed software engineer working as a security guard), but I'm definitely a MAWG.

Not familiar with the term, but Google turns up this.

Here I was thinking I was a MAWG, but I'm not. I have a few more years until I qualify as "MA".

On one of the August 1999 episodes, ABCD was the correct order for a Fastest Finger question, I believe it was the one putting fractions in order of value.

Well, the problem is that "Japan" covers about 20 degrees of longitude, so that's a really crappy line of demarcation, given the countries to arrange in relation to that. Wikipedia says that the longitude of Iriomote, an island at the western end of Okinawa prefecture (part of Japan) is at 123° 48′ E, while they list the Philippine island of Mindanao at 125° 00′ E. Technically, then, some small corner of the Philippines is further east that an even smaller corner of Japan. Not that most folks would interpret it that way.

elwing played on Saturday and Sunday - again without me in the room.

Saturday's questions:
Q1. Put these words in order to form the name of a Woodward and Bernstein book:
1 - men
2 - all
3 - the
4 - president's
Spoiler
No problem here, it's 2341
Q2 - Put these technological advancements in chronological order starting with the earliest.
1 - cotton gin
2 - ???
3 - tractor
4 - plow
Spoiler
4123 - I can't decipher her writing for answer #2
Q3 - Put these songs in the order they were first released, starting with the earliest.
1 - Little Red Corvette
2 - ...black...
3 - Yellow Submarine
4 - Blue Suede Shoes
Spoiler
2314 - Surprisingly elwing got this one right - she said it was more luck than skill. Again the #2 answer is indecipherable
Q4 - Put these movies in the order that they received the Academy Award for best animated feature.
1 - Ratatouille
2 - Finding Nemo
3 - WALL-E
4 - Shrek
Spoiler
Her answer was 4213, which I would have thought correct, but Sad Fred disagreed. It's possible she punched in the numbers incorrectly.
Her Sunday didn't go as well.
Q1. Put these words in order to form the name of a U.S. landmark.
1 - tower
2 - devil's
3 - national
4 - monument
Spoiler
2134 - We've been there. NB: elwing has never seen Close Encounters
Q2. Put these words in order to form the name of a 1997 Billboard Top 10 hit.
1 - thing
2 - that
3 - do
4 - what
Spoiler
She punched in 2143, thinking she might have misheard and it was "That Thing You Do", but Sad Fred told her to try again. I saw the question in this thread - "what" should have been "wop", not that that would have helped elwing. I've never heard of the song, either

2314 can't possibly be right for those songs. "Little Red Corvette" (by Prince) is 1980s, while of course "Blue Suede Shoes" goes back to Elvis and "Yellow Submarine" is the Beatles. I'm guessing the "Black" song is "Back to Black," which was a recent Amy Winehouse song and has shown up on some other TNPG questions. That would make it 4312 Even if "Black" was something old enough to be first, there's no way a Prince song antedated an Elvis song.

Like I said, I've got a mac at home and for some reason, it won't let me sign on. So here's this weekend's Q's. At least I SAW a Q5.

Q1.
The COBOL question

Q2. Put these times of the year, in the US in order, starting with January:
1. Celebration of Tet
2. Beginning of Summer
3. Beginning of Daylight Savings Time
4. End of Daylight Savings Time
1,3,2,4

Q3. The Steven King book order question.

Q4. The Journalists Question with George Will, Hearst, Wolfe and Cronkite

Q5. Put these composers in order of birth, from the earliest:
1. Mozart
2. Vivaldi
3. Elger
4. John Cage
2,1,3,4

I switched Mozart and Vivaldi. SHIT !!!!!

Q1. Put these in order from the smallest:
1. Earth
2. Nucleus
3. Sun
4. Universe
2,1,3,4

Q2. Put these movies in order, from the MOST RECENT:
1. Smokey and the Bandit
2. Me, Myself, Irene
3. Bonnie and Clyde
4. Thelma and Louise
2,4,1,3

Q3. Put these orators in order, from the earliest:
1. MLK Jr.
2. Daniel Webster
3. Abe Lincoln
4. Churchill
2,3,4,1

Q1. Stages of being a human order question.

Q2. Cartoons in order question

Q3. Greek letters in order:
1. Lamda
2. Epsilon
3. Phi
4. Kappa
2,4,1,3

Q4. Religious Leaders in order from the earliest:
1. William Penn
2. MLK Jr
3. Jessie Jackson
4. Eddy
1,4,2,3

I had never heard of Eddy before. And even though preachers, I wouldn't consider MLK and Jessie to be "religious" leaders.

Good luck to everyone else. This is really getting to get old, for me.

I had never heard of Eddy before.
Must have been Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the Christian Science Church (or Church of Jesus Christ, Scientist, if you prefer). Definitely second on the list.

while of course "Blue Suede Shoes" goes back to Elvis

Actually, it goes back even further, to Carl Perkins, but he released it about 2 weeks before Elvis covered it. Also a rockabilly, he's usually philosophical in interviews about "not having been Elvis".

This is another wonky question.

Wiki says Visa was founded in 1970, 4 years after Master Card. But Visa was originally BankAmericard, which was founded a number of years before Master Card.
Hmmm...

My research indicates Visa succeeded Bank Americard in 1976, and MasterCard succeeded MasterCharge in 1979.

If you want to talk about predecessor entities:

BankAmericard was founded in 1958, and Bank of America spun it of to the control of an independent corporation in 1970. But the card itself goes back to 1958, not 1970.

The MasterCharge name first appeared in 1967.

So either way, BankAmericard/Visa came before MasterCharge / MasterCard. Granted the 1976-1979 thing is a little close.
