Undoubtedly there are people who go for the wrong reasons -- fear, convention, appearances, social advantage. But there is a very real value for many of us. It's just hard to explain to somebody who doesn't share that value.
My pastor was saying only this morning that you can find God anywhere. But faith can be much more meaningful when shared with a community.
Heck, even something as trivial as being a fan of a game show can be a richer experience when you share it with a community. How much truer that can be when even deeper values and issues are involved.
A big REC for Frank.
We have a perfectly nice Catholic parish down the road. Several of my cousins on dad's side of the family belong there. They love it but they also had children go through the parish school and have a real sense of the community there.
When I moved back to Philadelphia from DC, I started back at TLAF's parish.
A couple of years later, something told me to give money to the CYO at St. Malachy's through the United Way.
I received a wonderful thank you note from Father McNamee, the pastor. I went there to introduce myself.
At my first Mass, I was so struck by the sense of love and joy in the congregation that I became a parishoner. I was home.
Boonie and Father Mac tease each other constantly.
Here's something I found on Father Mac. Also, if you can pick up a copy of that issue of St. Anthony's messenger, it's also fine reading.

Father Mac retired from "active duty" (day to day running the parish) but still lives at the rectory.
