Gustav and Katrina.

Sounds like a couple in some Victor Herbert operetta.

Except these two aren't singing "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life."

Hey, beast--would these constitute excused absences? If they're on their way, I'm in Vegas so fast it makes everybody's head spin....

Interesting looking Computer Models for TS Hanna. If GFS, UKMET, or GFDL stay on track that could put Hanna right on the heels of Gustav.

Okay, enough of the weather reports..........

Uly is in MD with a roomate named Phoebe and a cat named Roo.

I think this requires more analysis!

I think so too!! I wondered this last night when I read it but figured I had missed some reference to it in a thread.

Wasn't that no. 14 on the Billboard Pop chart in 1982?

Hah! before I could post this Ed more or less beat me to it.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Uh, uh.......this one is fairly screaming Hoyt Axton:

It was Della and a dealer and a dog named Jake,
And a cat named Kalamazoo,
Left the city in a pick-up truck.
Gonna make some dreams come true.
Yeah, they rolled out west where the wild sun sets,
And the coyote bays at the moon.
Della and a dealer and a dog named Jake,
And a cat named Kalamazoo.

If that cat could talk, what tales he'd tell,
About Della and the Dealer and the dog as well.
But the cat was cool,
And he never said a mumblin' word.

Down Tucson way there's a small cafe,
Where they play a little cowboy tune.
And the guitar picker was a friend of mine,
By the name of Randy Boone.

Yeah, Randy played her a sweet love song,
And Della got a fire in her eye.
The Dealer had a knife and the dog had a gun,
And the cat had a shot of rye.

If that cat could talk, what tales he'd tell,
About Della and the Dealer and the dog as well.
But the cat was cool,
And he never said a mumblin' word.

Yeah, the Dealer was a killer; he was evil and mean,
And he was jealous of the fire in her eyes.
He snorted his coke through a century note,
And he swore that Boone would die.

And the stage was set when the lights went out,
There was death in Tucson town.
Two shadows ran for the bar back door,
But one stayed on the ground.

If that cat could talk, what tales he'd tell,
About Della and the Dealer and the dog as well.
But the cat was cool,
And he never said a mumblin' word.

Two shadows ran from the bar that night,
And a dog and a cat ran too.
And the tires got hot on the pickup truck,
As down the road they flew.

Along with American Pie, Morning Has Broken, Bad, Bad Leroy Brown and a slew of others, this song is one of those songs that later in life I wondered how I knew almost all of the lyrics. My mom later said these were favorites of hers. It is amazing what sticks and doesn't stick in this little noggin of mine.

I blame it on Boise. I used to make the trek from Reno to Boise during the '70's (note the apostrophe) on a fairly regular basis and those are the songs that I'd be listening to all the way there and back.

Of course, I can't recall what I had for breakfast.

Della and the Dealer is from 1971? I distinctly remember playing the hell out of Rusty Old Halo in the 80s and I can't remember that album being that out of date when I got it.

Now I'm going to have to go through the album container to check the publishing date. Because I'm odd like that.
Spoiler
I'm darned good and ready.

Axton Update:

(The album was towards the front. I think I had it out checking some lyrics when I did the last LS game.)

The publication date on the liner sleeve for Della and the Dealer is 1978.

Yes, I know nobody cares but me and nobody loves Hoyt Axton like I do, but I can now sleep easy tonight knowing that I wasn't listening to some musty decade old tune in 1981. Ha!

Hey!!! Y'all can't hijack the Hurricane Gustav thread! We're supposed to be in freakout mode!! Ack!

No really, I was just looking back at some of the TimesPicayune print editions after Katrina. I wish more people woulda taken Katrina seriously. From what I've been reading on wwl.com they're being very cautious. Good.

I think so. We live far enough inland (just north of Jackson) that we won't need to evacuate.

After Katrina, we lost power for 2 days. I am anticipating somthing like that happening again if Gustav does about the same thing Katrina did. I don't think he will, tho. It looks like he's going to go further to the west than Katrina did.

I am praying hard for the family that I have still in New Orleans. I have cousins and aunts and uncles that have rebuilt and it would be just devastating to them if they lost everything again. Most of them are either leaving town tonight or tomorrow morning. I have a guest bedroom and will prolly have guests in it soon.

Thanks for asking, melly.

I remember you mentioned family in One of My Favorite Cities in America.

Not that long ago, we saw an Antiques Roadshow rerun very late at night. It was from New Orleans in 2001 or 2002.

A guy had an autographed picture of his father with Muhammad Ali and there were all manner of really interesting things.

I wonder how many of these things survived. My heart hurt for them, 2 1/2 years after the fact.

EDITING TO AMEND: My heart hurt for the people who lost everything, not the things.

I cannot imagine having to rebuild yet again.

And prayers for everyone. Candles will be lit Sunday.

While I can't quote many exact event dates from the '70's (as I saw quite a few of them through the bottom of a bottle) I'm pretty sure I can give you a run for your money in the adoration of Hoyt Axton department.

His duo with Linda Ronstadt of Lion in the Winter among my most favorites. Evangelina another.

I still have many of his albums when albums were albums. Just don't know "exactly" where they are as many boxes went to the attic when I moved to Texas.

And I hope all you storm folks are safe and remain that way.

I gotcha. My cousin lived in Lakeview now she and her husband live in Metairie. When she left before Katrina, she dint thnk it would be all that bad and that her house wouldn't flood. She got 8 feet of water in her one story house and she prolly lost $50,000 in jewelry alone. It just floated away. But she and her husband are still alive and they have cars to get out of the city. A lot of people down there don't even own a car to get them out.

No. I can't speak for "Della and the Dealer." I was speaking for "Me And You And A Dog Named Boo," which is the song I referenced. DevilKitty brought up "Della and the Dealer" after I posted. If you think "Della" was from the 80s, then it probably was.

Whoa! Gustav went from a Tropical Storm yesterday all the way to Category 5 Hurricane this afternoon. Building in strength was expected but I didn't see anyone predicting Cat 5 this quickly.

The current models have Gustav giving Louisiana a glancing blow before heading to Texas. That might be worse for LA in terms of rainfall along the coast.

Still the potential for lots of problems in New Orleans. If Gustav hits the coast just west of New Orleans that puts the city on the "dirty" side of the storm and probably lots of rain and potentially a big storm surge. Let's hope the levees hold.

Lots of variables before we know the impact here in Houston. Some of the models have Gustav going back out into the Gulf after hitting Louisiana. That would probably be bad for Houston in the middle of the week.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Stay safe. We needed rain and got tons of it from Fay. Hope it's just rain and and no wind if anything. The waiting to see what these storms decide to do is the worst part. This one has really strengthened in a hurry!

Local stations (out of Shreveport) began running 411 information Friday afternoon. They have set up quite a few shelters. They say their biggest problem so far is finding enough bilingual people to help them communicate with the Spanish-speaking evacuees. Barksdale AFB has been assisting in that area.

Schools in the Shreveport area have been suspended for Mon.-Wed. per Gov. Jindal's orders. Lots of traffic here and hotels are beginning to fill up.

Gustav is projected to hit my area Wed. AM.
