I am seeing some differing numbers for how many gold medals had been won by the USA prior to these Games. I imagine that it depends on the results of various disqualifications for doping.

Of course, the numbers would be considerably more if you looked at the athletes who lived and/or trained their formative years in the US. (Look at swimming this year)

According to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-time_O ... edal_count

They added them up.
I think the soccer team made a better story and nobody looked at the 400 metres.

I agree. That's a pretty stunning advancement.

They did finish 4th in 1996 but they were 9th out of 12 teams four years ago.

Iceland was 2-1-2 in the preliminary round but scored the 2nd most goals in the overall tournament.

Iceland has never won a gold medal in the Olympics and only 1 silver and two bronzes in its history. The silver was in 1956.

Iceland's team handball roster. You can tell Iceland still uses the traditional custom of father's name + son as a last name.

Do Icelandic women still have to put "dottir" on their names?

Yes, they do. The Icelandic singer Bjork's full name is Bjork Guðmundsdóttir.

But I was too limiting about the "father's name" bit. People may choose to use their mother's name as well as their father's name plus "son" or "dottir".

Oh, yeah, and some families have the right to use a family name. If you got a family name from the King of Denmark back in the day you can use that instead of _son or _dottir.

Iceland also has a Naming Committee that approves given names that haven't been used before. Part of the requirements for a new name is that it is capable of being declinated into the possessive tense in Icelandic.

Do they name their computers too?
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

I've read that the Icelandic phone book is organized by first names rather than by last names.

Did anyone stay up and watch the Baskeball game? Emma and I did. It was a good game.

Count me in as an unlikely yes. Annie, Lizbit and I snuggled on the couch and watched the game. (All three of us woke up there this morning.)

I did. I was quite surprised by what I saw. --Bob

I thought for a while that Spain might win the gold medal.
