All four of us kids were together for a week. We started giving my mom a hard time about how the first day of school went for each of us (except Robin, who is called by her name).

Maybe we should give it up - those kids probably have a harder time during roll call than we did - August and wanting to be called Gus, Linda and wanting to be called Michelle and Gloria and wanting to be called Lynn doesn't seem so bad.

I had to write an autobiography for school way back when and I mistakenly used the word "conceive" when what I meant was "born." However, my birth involved popping out during a tornadic thunderstorm in northern Wisconsin.

If I HAD been conceived during the storm my name would have been:

Bend Over and Kiss It Goodbye

It has a feminine ring to it.
Well, then

Smart kid.

I do not recall ever seeing "in utero" on the list of Safe Places To Be During A Tornado...

Although, it was the most interior room of the place and close to plumbing for reinforcement.

My one tornadic experience was in Wisco. In a relocated Norwegian sodhouse or somesuch. There was no foundation just a dirt floor. Everyone was praying except the baby in the stroller. Methinks this was in Eagle.

I do not know what a sodhouse is and I'm part Norwegian. Is it a house made of sod? Or just a stinky house? The baby in the stroller was probably hoping they'd all get blown away so he didn't have to eat lutefisk anymore.

We joked around about naming the wee one Peroni, since we'd had so many of them in Rome. 8) (Really did consider the name Rome for a boy, but didn't want our kid to have a Bahama story....) [/img]
It could have been worse:

When I was first expecting Megan, & trying to calculate my due date assuming an early November conception, my mom told me that I was conceived on November 11. I asked her what the heck were they doing, celebrating Veterans Day??? She said as a matter of fact -- yes! They had gone to Philly for the long weekend (also to celebrate my mom's recovery from her emergency appendix surgery on October 11!)

So I could have been named Veterans Day -- or even Appendicitis!

I like the name Jasper, I've always admired Jasper Tudor, but it's a name that I would only give to a cat.

Jeff's parent's neighbors have a grandchild named Sebastian and Emma always snickers when she hears that name because she thinks of it as a cat name.

When I was working for Jasper, every once in a while we'd get a salesperson on the phone asking for "Casper" Lastname! I always cracked up at that  Jasper the Friendly Ghost!

I've never met a real-life Casper & other than Caspar Weinberger I don't really know of any.

I like Sebastian too! And not just for cats :) Right now I have a cat named Little John & grandson named John -- we call him Baby John or Johnny 'cause Little John is the cat's name.

Lt. Caspar Collins of the U.S. Cavalry was the namesake for Casper, the town where I grew up. (City founders weren't terribly precise about spelling in those days.) Collins died at age 20 in 1865 while leading a force of 23 men against up to 3,000 Sioux, Cheyenne, and Araphaho at Platte Bridge Station in Wyoming Territory.

Historical footnote: Colorado's Fort Collins was named after Caspar's father.

I guess I should have said a contemporary real-life Casper! Other than Weinberger & Van Dien, I can't think of any. DJ Casper is a stage name.

Then there was always Caspar/Kasper/Gaspar of the Three Wise Guys

Well, I wasn't there, but I don't think Caspar had any choice or advance knowledge about the odds. From the stories I've heard at Fort Caspar, he and his men crossed the bridge to meet a wagon train that wanted protection. Once across the river, the soldiers suddenly were surrounded when horses and men started to pour over and from behind the foothills. The troopers tried to retreat back over the bridge, and a few made it, but most were killed. Casper was considered a hero because (a) he was the highest ranking officer of the group and (b) he stayed at the rear on the retreat to try to give some cover to his men. Whether that's the complete truth or PR legend, he was no George Custer who was itching for a battle.

I've never heard what happened to the wagon train, but I think I can guess.
