I slipped to 28th place after missing yesterday's question on which world leader was known as "The Iron Chancellor".

But the good news is that I hit Rank 4 today. :)

I think I had a similar problem today, and I didn't wait to press the "final click." The question just took several seconds to load and this time was counted against me, and I know there was a problem because I knew the answer right away. I'm not glad to hear it's happened to you, but it's nice to know I'm not crazy. :?
I talked awhile back about how I didn't understand why my times were 7 or 8 seconds for something that I know took less than 2 seconds before I hit submit (see "Babe Ruth" see "Red Sox" click, click). I swore that time kept running down after you clicked, but this actually makes more sense, that time starts before you even see the question!

I'm definitely not going to answer on my laptop anymore. I knew I should have waited to play that showdown thing until I was on the desktop, but it didn't take over 5 seconds to figure out who did Lust for Life!

Although as many as I've missed this month (4! It's a new monthly record and that's only through the 10th), the time really doesn't matter. Ha!

Back where I belong today.

How was I supposed to know how long a Martian day is?
I am about 25% sure of this.

I keep timing out before I ever see the question. That page hangs up for some reason. Just happened for the third of forth time this month. :x

I read a SF series once that talked about this issue. I think it was the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. In the books they used Earth clocks on Mars but they were programmed to just stop for 39 minutes, and some seconds at midnight every day and then start back up again.

Kind of made for an interesting period of "no time" every night.

The Martian calendar had 24 months of 28 days each. I think they used Jan-Dec and then Jan2-Dec2 for each year. Finally, the universal 28 day month!
No matter where you go, there you are.

Just curious -- does anyone try to Google these questions? I haven't seen any prohibition on doing so, and I've heard it's OK to Google in at least some other contests on Sploofus. Is it a no-no with TQOTD?

You get those?!?!?

I usually only see 1 or 2 a month. <40% for almost everything I see, mostly in the random selection range (15-25%).
Boom! Just missed my second in a row. A whopping 22.2% got this one right.
Today's question: 18.1% have answered correctly. But before I answered, it might have been 18%, so YAY! I was perilously close to quadruple digits.

I'm glad that Mr. Sploofus saw my gripe that I don't see any easy questions. The last three days were 59, 56 & 44%.

Too bad I slow clicked all three, so no big bonuses. I really should wait till I wake up to play this game.

Of course this month the only miss I've had was a miss click on the button, so I am way overdue for a run of chokes & 'whaddats'.

Well, I got an easy one today. Given the genus and species name I had to identify the animal. It had been correctly picked by 3.8% of the players.

I didn't improve the percentage.
Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!

That'll be $10, please.

I am torn. I have not Google, but it is tempting.

I assume it is against the spirit of the competition, which I think prompts us to know stuff or try to figure it out.

On the other hand, and there is often another hand, anyone could Google in a second window, so you would not be taking unfair advantage. You would not be using a resource other players don't have.

I tell my students it is the teacher's responsibility to make up new questions for exams, so they can't learn everything from the previous section's tests. And there is a certain amount of stuff sploofus question-writers can do to make them ungooglable. But not all of them.

Tonight I was asked for another term for mitochondria, which I was able to eliminate two of them and just sort of felt my way to the correct answer. I know it is better to know everything, but my life has not been long enough to manage that yet, so I must intuit sometimes. But being able to eliminate two of the answers was indeed about knowing some facts, so we take heart when we can.

I had too much to drink last night and Sploofused my question anyway.

I ended up getting the fastest time that I have had in a long time.

We had a wine flight with dinner, there was no absinthe. There was also a lovely port served with dessert that tasted like liquid caramel.

Speaking of hobbits, I never could keep them straight, even though 75% of contestants can. The descent begins.

I have returned to the top 100 after missing two early Qs this month. Tonight's was vocabulary, on which I always bet a token if I have one, and I did.
