Shade, I've served on PAF lists 20 times. I'd be more than happy to make it 21 should you get The Call. --BobShade wrote:Yeah, I guess I'll message him. The reason I added him to my facebook was because he has kind of become my role model. He is a brilliant Neuro-psychologist and a big time game show winner. I'm still hoping I might be able to get someone from here to be my PAF, if anyone would be willing.

Thanks everyone.
And for those who offered their time as a possible PAF, I am extremely grateful. I already wrote my message to Ogi, I didn't know he was a member of this forum so I didn't think to include that I was a member of this forum in my message. If he responds I will find a way to mention it if it isn't an automatic rejection.
My postcard was postmarked: 6/30. The mail system seemed to have worked very quickly.
My brother, is a genius at a variety of topic. He is also a very good Googler, so he would be a great PAF because he will put me on speaker phone and my Dad's friend Susan is also a genius so it will be a like think tank. (I've mentioned Susan before on this board, she passed the written test but she did not get a happy postcard)
I know Ogi's time is valuable, I'd be extremely grateful for any PAF volunteers here.

Beware the speaker phone!!! I've seen a lot crash and burn. Remember you are basically on speaker phone yourself...so speaker calling speaker leads to a lot of "what?" and "can you read the choices again" and bzz bzz there goes the time...Shade wrote:My brother, is a genius at a variety of topic. They used to tell people that non-land-line devices were not allowed. They included speaker-phones in that category, even though they technically feed off of land lines. Back when they had the ROF, they told contestants it was because of the bad sound-quality, not some other reason. Party lines would probably be frowned on for the same reasons (each new person picking up can weaken the sound a little, though these days lots of devices probably exist to punch it back up) but I'd guess since there have been so many people allowed through with "suspect" connections (& plenty who were heard typing into search engines, which in the language of the papers contestants signed was not allowed) that they've eased up on that.
Remember, though, that precious time can be lost getting a team of simultaneous-answerers coordinated; you would want to have them all listening in in hand-signal reach of each other, however you do it. And just have one do all the talking to Meredith.
If you've watched the show enough, you've seen that after the clock starts, any small-talk on the part of either the asker or answerer, & any hemming & hawing on the part of the answerer, kills too much time. PAFs should be precise in what they say, even if its the dreaded "I don't know".

Re: WOW!
Congrats on the happy PC. As for feeling not good enough, I felt the same way when I got the PC/Call, but then I eventually realized what will be, will be and you will get whatever stack that they give you. Hopefully you get one that is to your liking.Shade wrote: I'm also very nervous, I don't know if or when I will get a call, what if I miss it? Am I smart enough to be on the show![]()

You just need to practice with your PAFs. Use old questions from the transcripts. Time yourself. Make your PAFs aware that this is important. Anybody you choose from this bored will be well versed in PAFing. But you still need to practice no matter who you use. And you should make sure that your weak areas are covered.

Shade responds to my admonition that PAFs should be trained with an iron hand not to dilly-dally:
I wasn't trying to scare you that much. PAF is probably your most valuable lifeline, as it can get you someone who is 100% sure of the answer if all the cards fall in the right place. I just hate to hear (as we all do over the show's phone connection) uncertain people, people who don't know how to Google rapidly & are just discovering this on air, etc etc. If you have lined up someone who is an expert on some subject, & you get a question you can't answer on this topic, please please please (this is a generic plea not only to you but to all future contestants) call them, not a relative because you want your relatives to know you really value them, or a Googler who knows nothing about the topic, no matter how fast they are. (Of course, experts who can also Google fast enough to double-check even their expert selves are the cream of the crop). This almost makes me wish that PAF was replaced with some other type of life line. It's really making me nervous.

Practice with yourself using old questions. b/4 you tell Meredith you want to use the PAF, read the question to yourself, asking what you can edit out to make the question shorter. There is almost always detractor info thrown in there that's not necessary to say to the PAF. Give them the guts. Don't say A,B,C,D. just give them the answers. Practice with someone out loud as well so you can practice your reading. Don't worry about dead air if you study the question, they just edit it out. Our group in the green room made an agreement among ourselves that we would re-read every question b/4 saying final answer, so we wouldn't get stung with saying one thing and meaning something else. (granted we were all gun shy since we were llamas)

Shade, do you play NTN/Buzztime Trivia at all? There are some really good players in the NYC/LI area and I know some have been on PAF lists in the past. I'm not sure how feasible this is as the game is played primarily in bars though, and IIRC, you're under 21, yes? If it's possible, you might want to go try it out, both to see some questions and meet some folks.Shade wrote:Thanks everyone for your input. Despite criticisms of the USPS, it can be very efficient. One day to a local postmark isn't that unusual in my area. Even not so local; my mom, living south of Boston, has gotten next-day delivery of first class mail I've sent her from work in mid-state NH. And it's not picked up until 4 PM.Shade wrote:My postcard was postmarked: 6/30. The mail system seemed to have worked very quickly.
And now I'm nervous, because your card may mean mine, whichever one it is, is in the mail and could be waiting for me when I get home tonight. Alcohol will be available either way - champagne for

Good luck to KT's friend and ron155, also waiting for cards from auditions just before mine.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Oh great! I was wondering about that. NTN Buzztime (it used to be NTN but they changed the name to Buzztime) is a computer trivia game that is played in bars and bar and grill type places. The reason I asked is because a lot of the big trivia fans in the area play it.Shade wrote:

Meeting some of those folks might help you build a PAF list. I also thought it might appeal to you because the questions are multiple-choice, and some of the games are definitely the kind of thing you'll see on Millionaire. It's also fun.

Definitely take as much time as you need. They don't care how long you take, within reason. What you see on tv is often edited significantly from what happened in the studio. If you get the call, on your first day of taping they'll give you the whole legal briefing about how long you can take, what you should do, when you risk disqualification, etc. But the average person has nothing to worry about.Shade wrote:Oh great!
