Kansas City has lost 78 games so the Royals cannot win more than 84 games. Cleveland has won 85 games so Kansas City cannot win the American League Central Division. The Tigers also have won 85 games so the Royals will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Central Division. Toronto, the Yankees, and Boston each have won at least 86 games so Kansas City will finish behind at least two non-division winners in the American League Eastern Division.

Kansas City will not get a rematch of the 2015 World Series. The Royals have been toastified. --Bob

San Francisco has lost 81 games so the Giants cannot win more than 81 games. The Dodgers have won 88 games so the Giants cannot win the National League Western Division. San Diego has won 87 games so San Francisco will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division. The Brewers and Cubs each have won at least 88 games so the Giants will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Central Division. Philadelphia has won 92 games and the Mets have won 81 games, and San Francisco cannot win any tiebreaker that includes the Mets, so the Giants will finish behind at least one additional non-division winner in the National League Eastern Division or the National League Central Division.

The 2020s have not been the Giants' decade. San Francisco has been toastified. --Bob

St. Louis has lost 81 games so the Cardinals cannot win more than 81 games. Milwaukee has won 96 games so St. Louis cannot win the National League Central Division. The Cubs have won 89 games so the Cardinals will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Central Division. Los Angeles and San Diego each have won at least 87 games so St. Louis will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division. The Phillies have won 93 games, the Mets have won 81 games, and the Cardinals cannot win any possible tiebreaker that includes the Mets, so St. Louis will finish behind at least one additional non-division winner.

There will be no October baseball in Missouri. St. Louis has been toastified. --Bob

Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Texas, St. Louis and San Francisco were all taken seriously at some point in time during the second half of the season as wild card contenders. They are all out, and yet the Marlins, who nobody has taken seriously as a wildcard contender at any point in the season, are still somehow alive with four days left in the season (and still have no realistic shot). That deserves some special kind of survivor award...

I've never seen a season in which we've had so many alternating hot and cold streaks by so many teams. Just before the all-star break, Tampa Bay went 25-9 and people were seriously wondering what postseason baseball would look like in a 10,000-seat stadium. As of today, they're 77-81. Similarly, the San Francisco Giants went on a 14-4 hot streak in late August and early September to move into contention. They're now 78-81.

On the other hand, Detroit led Cleveland by 15 1/2 games at one time, and in early September, ESPN gave Cleveland a 0.1% chance (1 in 1000) of winning the division. Cleveland is now in first place by one game. Not quite as dramatic, Toronto blew a four-game lead over the Yankees in the last seven days.

It's not a matter of whether you get hot or cold this season; it's a matter of when.

Houston (5 game losing streak) is trying their best to get October off, but Detroit (8 game losing streak) is fighting them tooth and nail.

It's kind of a shame one of those teams has to make it, because neither are playing like they want to be in the playoffs.

Reminds me of the 2006 Cardinals doing their best to cough up a huge division lead they had on the Astros in the final two weeks..... only to end up squeaking in and winning the whole damn thing.

Arizona has lost 80 games so the Diamondbacks cannot win more than 82 games. Los Angeles has won 91 games so Arizona cannot win the National League Western Division. The Padres have won 88 games so the Diamondbacks will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division. Milwaukee and Chicago each have won at least 90 games so Arizona will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Central Division. The Reds have won 82 games and the Diamondbacks cannot win any tiebreaker that includes the Reds, so Arizona will finish behind at least one additional non-division winner.

Unlike last year, Arizona's hopes did not make it to the season's last day. The Diamondbacks have been toastified. --Bob

The Mets finish the season having lost 79 games and won 83. Philadelphia won 96 games so New York did not win the National League Eastern Division. The Dodgers and Padres each have won at least 89 games so the Mets finish behind at least one non-division winner in the National League Western Division. Milwaukee and Chicago each won at least 92 games, the Reds won 83 games, and Cincinnati owns the tiebreaker over New York, so the Mets finish behind at least two non-division winners in the National League Central Division.

Another late-season New York collapse is complete. The Mets have been toastified. --Bob
