I do remember SilverCamaro being there quite early now, as well as Beebs.
Amazing how much has changed in 18 years.
For one thing, I remember being in MBA school and doing my round one phone calls from a pay phone on campus.
Pay phones being ubiquitous in 1999 is something people wouldn't imagine today.

Re: Pushing 17 Years
I'm sure lb can substantiate that my "official" Bored anniversary is in May, but I can remember coming to the ABC version of the Bored not long after BAM premiered. I was a lurker at the time; as I recall my first "official" post was in February 2000 after I got my first callback. I may have used a different handle at that time; when I joined in May I used earendel100.

Re: Pushing 17 Years
I did not go on the original board until after my appearance on the show in August 2000, when I peeked in to check my "reviews." I had no idea what message boards were or how they worked, or much of anything else about the Internet. (In fact, I did not even own my own computer until I bought one with my winnings.)
When I got invited to join the GC, I wasn't even sure I wanted to. And I certainly didn't have any interest in belonging to two communities, which is why I confined myself to the GC until it died off.
I remember saying at the time, "I'm not sure how active I'll be ... but do you think maybe I've found an audience for these trivia games I make up?"

Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I actually got my first cell phone in order to be sure I got Round 2 callbacks, instead of having to remain at home or at work during the callback period. Mrs. SSS thought it was silly to buy a cell phone because we didn't really need one, even though I got one with the cheapest possible plan.Jeemie wrote: Pay phones being ubiquitous in 1999 is something people wouldn't imagine today.
And shortly before I joined the Bored, I registered several domains for my website, including Silver Screen Select, because silverscreenvideos.com wasn't available. It was only after I joined the Bored that it became evailable (I was selling merchandise on ebay under the Silver Screen Videos name already) and I got it. But I figured I would keep my original Bored Name.

Apropo of nothing-but, regarding domain names. I am perpetually surprised that "TheGuillotine.com" was apparently snaggled up by Minnesota amateur wrestling early in the internets years. I looked at it some recently because we had a team go to state.

Thanks jaybee, but that avatar picture is from December of 2007. Here's a pic I took of myself today (wearing the Dirk 30,000 points t-shirt, a giveaway at last night's Maverick-Laker game).jaybee wrote:I gotta say Daniel, if your avatar pic is recent than there is not much change from your 16-year younger self save for the lack of 'stash. I too, joined up in late '99 and started posting soon after. I remember that a reply to my very first post said, "you sound young" (I was in my early 40's)
I never paid for the phone game. Posted to the bored via dial-up AOL. And walked 5 miles to school every day - uphill both ways and barefoot.

Re: Pushing 17 Years
The 41 at the end of my Bored name was a suggested number from Yahoo when I tried to sign up for an email address with just danielh. When I got the message that that was unavailable, I took their first suggestion. The 41 means absolutely nothing, other than that, and yet, I've used it all these years.silverscreenselect wrote:I actually got my first cell phone in order to be sure I got Round 2 callbacks, instead of having to remain at home or at work during the callback period. littlebeast13 wrote:Somewhere in one of my notebooks, I still have the "author number" of everyone from the old days of the rankings. These numbers were assigned in numerical order by Go based on time of registration and gave a pretty good indication of when most BB's joined. I know mine was just a few thousand above 23000000 (May 6, 2000... not when I first posted, but when I registered for Go) and many of my fellow New Classers were also in the 23MM to 27MM range....
lb13
I thought I had something like this saved somewhere. I created this in July 2007:
----------------------------------------
Below is a list I compiled of all BB's for who I was able to find an author number for. Pretty much anyone who posted during the last half of the Love Boat, who was also in the expanded rankings, should be included. Also, any random BB's from the old days who I happened to copy a number down for (With WTVT® and no cut & paste, I had to stash some author numbers to quickly pull up lists of posts by an author) will be here. In addition, I trolled through the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine to find every link to an author number I could find (It had a strange fascination with Couch_Potato24 for some reason, though....), and was able to find a treasure trove of numbers for Old & New Class BB's. There should be few omissions of major players here, but there are undoubtably some not represented here (Perhaps most notably, wild bill, whose # I could not find anywhere). In addition, I included a few notable MM's as well as a few other "infamous" players in history who I could find (But not Couchie for some reason, though I had many chances to copy his number down).
There are few author numbers after the destruction of the old Go format in June 2004 for a few reasons. First off, none of the current Bored links use an author number, so it's impossible to determine one from the Bored as it was on the previous two incarnations of the Bored. Second, sometime in late '04 or early '05, Go changed its entire system of awarding author numbers, and the numbers seem to go from the late 66,000,000's straight to the 100,000,000's, so the continuity's gone. The only current way I know of to determine an author number of an unknown handle is via an ESPN contest (I used the entrants in the NCAA Tourney challenge). I also used the ESPN profiles feature to accurately determine month of resistration (It's amazing some of the handles that no longer "exist" according to the system)...
For BB's who had multiple regular handles, I have included both, but a note on the most recent one pointing towards the original handle.
Enjoy!

Hey, beast is digging up his old lists, just like in the good ol' days!
And I'm reminded from seeing that list that I registered my handle on Go back in February, 2000, but I continued to lurk until I finally got to play Round 2 of the Phone Game in December of that year.

I remember!Jeemie wrote:People might not remember than in the initial phone game for the August 1999 debut, there was a charge per call.
Back then, I did some mental calculations of the cost of that call vs. the odds of winning some money on the show and I decided it wasn't worth it. I never called in until they eliminated the charge in November, '99.
What I wouldn't pay to play the Phone Game again!

I knew it was coming, or I would have tried to find some other way to note my first Bored entry.MarleysGh0st wrote:Hey, beast is digging up his old lists, just like in the good ol' days!

Now if I could just get him to change that stupid avatar . . .

I got a go.com account in February 1999 to make a comment on the Good Morning America website (thus the dull userid). I found the original Bored in late 1999.

I was checking for BB's who had registered their ID's very close together, and I noticed the very tiny difference between you and ghost. Only 658 other Go ID's were registered between the two of you, meaning both of the Bored's longtime ghosts likely registered on the same day, and at the rate ID's were being claimed at that time, I'd dare say within half an hour of each other!

Thanks. I could not remember when I joined. So I've been here off and on for 16 years. I haven't done too many things in my life for 16 years.
