Arizona can see the flames, but have again avoided being officially toasted by beating the Giants and the Dodgers losing to the Pirates. However, just like on Saturday, they will be dropped in the toaster by losing to the Giants or the Dodgers winning against Pittsburgh (Cubs fans are hoping for the latter).

Arizona's loss today was the Diamondbacks' 78th loss of the season so they cannot win more than 84 games. The Dodgers have already won 85 games so Arizona cannot win the National League Western Division. Three teams in the National League Central Division have already won at least 87 games so Arizona will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

Another year in the desert for the Diamondbacks. Arizona has been toastified. --Bob

Eligible for toasting today are the Detroit Tigers. They are currently out of the running in the division, but can now be caught by the tail in the wild card by losing to the White Sox and Houston beating the angels.

Not good enough. Texas also would have to win. --Bob

With the Cubs now in the playoffs, the north siders can celebrate for the first time in 7 years. However, the south siders are on the verge of being toasted on Saturday with a loss to the Yankees and Houston winning to take them out of the wild card as the Royals have already clinched the division.

Detroit has been able to hold on with a 3 game winning streak (and Houston losing their last 3), but are still hovering above the flames with a loss to Minnesota and a Houston win to take them out of the wild card.

On the NL front:

With the wild card race, for all intensive purposes, over, its all down to the division eliminations. The Nationals will be dropped in the toaster by either losing to Philly or the Mets winning against the Reds.

San Francisco can also meet a toasty fate with a loss to Oakland AND the Dodgers winning against Colorado.

Almost missed this one. Congratulations to the Toronto Blue Jays, who have clinched a post-season berth. (Texas has two games left against Houston and four games remaining against the Angels, so at least one of those three teams will necessarily fall to at least 75 losses for the season.) --Bob

The Mets beat Cincinnati for New York's 88th win of the season. Washington has already lost 75 games so the National cannot win more than 87 games. The Nationals cannot win the National League Eastern Division. Three teams in the National League Central Division have already won at least 89 games, so Washington will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

It turns out that 85 ESPN experts can be wrong. The Nationals have been toastified. --Bob

The White Sox lost today for their 82nd loss of the season so Chicago cannot win more than 80 games. Kansas City has already won 89 games so the White Sox cannot win the American League Central Division. Two teams in the American League Eastern Division have already won at least 85 games and two teams in the American League Western Division have already won at least 81 games, so Chicago will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

Houston's win over the Rangers was the Astros' 82nd win of the season, so two teams in the American League Western Division have won at least 82 games. Seattle has lost 81 games so the Mariners cannot win more than 81 games. Seattle cannot win the American League Western Division. Two teams in the American League Eastern Division have won at least 86 games so Seattle will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

It'll be a rainy winter in Seattle. The Mariners have been toastified.

Tampa Bay has lost 81 games so the Rays cannot win more than 81 games. Toronto has won 90 games so Tampa Bay cannot win the American League Eastern Division and will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

Rays fans' eyes are as damp as the climate. Tampa Bay has been toastified. --Bob

Boston has lost 80 games this season so the Red Sox cannot win more than 82 games. Toronto has won 91 games so Boston cannot win the American League Eastern Division. The Yankees have won 86 games so Boston also will finish behind the Yankees and will finish no better than third in its division. Houston's win today was the Astros' 83rd win this season. Texas has won 84 games so Boston will finish behind at least one non-division winner in the American League Western Division.

The Curse resumes its potency. Boston has been toastified.

Baltimore's loss today was the Orioles' 80th loss this season so Baltimore cannot win more than 82 games. Two teams in the American League Eastern Division have won at least 86 games so the Orioles cannot win the American League Eastern Division and will finish no better than third in their division. Houston's win means that two teams in the American League Western Division have won at least 83 games so Baltimore will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

There is hope for Baltimore nevermore. The Orioles have been toastified. --Bob

The Giants lost tonight for their 75th loss of the season, so San Francisco cannot win more than 87 games. Their loss was also the Dodgers' 88th win of the season so San Francisco cannot win the National League Western Division. Three teams in the National League Central Division have already won at least 92 games, so San Francisco will finish behind at least two non-division winners.

No one's going to San Francisco in October. The Giants have been toastified. --Bob

It looks like a four way tie between Texas, Anaheim (I will never call them LAA) , Houston and Minnesota for the AL West/second wildcard is still possible, though remote. I would love to see MLB have to dig deep into its set of tiebreakers one of these years, but I have a feeling this won't be the season either...

No. The Rangers and Angels can't tie. Rangers have won 86 games, the Angels 83. They only play each other the final 4 games so the possible final wins are:

90-83
89-84
88-85
87-86
86-87

That's not possible, as BiT notes, but a four-way tie between Houston, Minnesota, the Yankees, and Texas or Los Angeles of Anaheim (with three playoff spots on the line) is still possible. In that case, Houston of Houston would play Texas or Los Angeles of Anaheim (with the winner winning the West) while Minnesota plays the Yankees (with the winner taking a wild card spot). The two losers would then play for the second wild card spot. Full tiebreak rules are here. --Bob
