Re: Study Suggests Muslim Job Discrimination in Red States
Full disclosure. I have no doubt there is discrimination.
However, I also believe that discrimination against non-muslims by muslim run businesses is greater than against muslims by non-muslim businesses. Same goes for Hispanic run businesses. That's life and human nature.

Merry Christmas to all y'alls. Could you get some Civil War shit going, too? Or maybe Whigs and Tories? How about Democrats marry their mothers and Repubs eat baby hearts?
Well, then

Re: Study Suggests Muslim Job Discrimination in Red States
I read part of the actual abstract, and I have to admit that I'm not positive I understand it completely. However my understanding is that there were actually two experiments conducted with two purposes. The first purpose was to try to measure what extent, if any, prejudice existed against Muslim vs. Christian or gay vs. straight job applicants. The second purpose was to try to measure what percentage of employers actually checked social media information.Estonut wrote:That's my point exactly. The testing group themselves said they were assuming that 10 to 33% of the employers viewed the planted social media data. They don't narrow it down any closer than that, nor do they explain why they'd even assume that. This experiment was barely controlled at all.silverscreenselect wrote:2) The fact that there is some reason does not mean discrimination. It requires further investigation to determine if there are other possible causes, but the more tightly controlled the experiment is, the less likely it is.
In the first experiment, people were actually supplied all the information about the person, including the social media profile and then asked questions about how likely they would be to call the person in for an interview. In the second experiment, the researchers "applied" for actual job openings by supplying identical resumes and creating online profiles employers could find if they wanted. They chose religion and sexual preference as distinguishing characteristics because they usually can't be inferred from a resume as sex often is.
Based on the results, they found religious variations in red states, with a considerably stronger variation in the test in which the actual social media profile was shown to the evaluator, as opposed to merely being searchable online. Based on that finding, they came up with their 10-33% estimate, which they admitted was very rough.
This is apparently the first scientific study of this type that's been done, so it's likely to get other people to perform similar experiments.

In other words it would have been better to qualify your post title with a disclaimer.

The only anti-Christian sentiment on the Bored I've seen has been by those who proclaim themselves Christians who are far from following the teachings of Christ.Beebs52 wrote:Too true, anti Christian sentiment, too.Bob Juch wrote:If they ever find the Bored, many here would be screwed.

Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
