Fortunately our insurance is fine and increases are at the lowest in awhile. However, I have read that assumptions for the future are based on hoping that uninsured peeps will jump into the market to pay for this willy nilly just because. To fund the additional 30, 000, 000 or so that aren't insured. Do you really think that will happen?

Another fun thing to think about is that based on the cost of the program that has increased due to glitches and such, they could give everyone 500, 000 to a mill to buy our own insurance. 290, 000, 000 so versus 330000000 population

The costs are not going down because medical usage will be going up. On the one hand, that's a good thing because it means people will be getting care that they didn't use to get before. On the other hand, it's going to cost a lot more money. That nonsense about costs being so high because of uninsured poor people sticking it to hospitals is a bunch of hooey... it's as big a joke as the right's claim that once they get tort reform doctors will stop practicing defensive medicine. It's actually Medicaid and Medicare patients who use the emergency rooms more often in non-emergency situations. Plus, not all uninsured will default on emergency room care. A number of them pay cash for the visits.

I have yet to find any information that I consider unbiased and reliable as to how rates compare under the PPACA from before. What I've seen are mostly anecdotal stories from people with an interest one way or another or cherrypicked "examples." Further, comparisons are difficult because deductibles, reimbursement percentages, and copays vary greatly from plan to plan. Also, it appears that at least in some states, some of the lower priced plans have a much more limited selection of doctors and hospitals than what people are accustomed to under most current plans (one of the reasons the old fashioned in-house HMO fell out of favor very quickly). Nor do these claims take into account the effect of subsidies that a lot of people will be eligible for.

My own view is that costs will be manageable for most people because the government is paying a huge percentage of the bill in a lot of cases, but that for those who fall just over 400% of the poverty level and get no help, medical bills could still be extremely expensive.

Today I found that they couldn't verify my identity, probably because of my recent move. So now I have to copy my DL and SS card and mail them in.

Where I mail them is London, Kentucky! (That's halfway between Knoxville and Lexington.) I'm guessing they picked that location because they can pay minimum wage to people who have never made that much before. I worked for Boston-based Fleet Bank (before they were bought) in Florence, SC who had a huge mortgage processing center there for that reason.
