Thank you Dave!
I will send a check to where ever it is needed.
But let's find a non-Facebook option. The Bored would not be the same without LB and our other non-FB people.

Re: All Good Things.... (Bored Shutdown 1/13/2013)
Thanks for your hard work in giving us this place to hang out. As for a new place, I'll just say to whoever wants to take up the challenge:
If you build it, I will come. I can't promise that I'll have Shoeless Joe with me, but I'll be there. I'll even let the flies outta my wallet and fork over a Hamilton or whatever a year. Hanging out with you folkses is CEERTAINLY worth that. Besides, I gotsta play LB's LS and take my usual 3rdish/4thish place. Heck, this year I might even get together a month of games myself (I probably have about 3 weeks' worth of ideas on various bits of paper laying around.
And then there's the annual event that always brings a rousing reaction of "huh?". The Boneys. Without youse guys, I've got no one to foist my annual list of favorites on. This year there's only about 84.7% of the tuneage that is totally obscure. That's way down from the usual 97.9%! Lord knows my wife won't read the list!
And we need to keep a place going for Vandal! His creative juices need an outlet, where he can continue to churn out those exceptional promos, keeping those writing chops primed so he can craft the next Great American Novel and get filthy rich and then act like he never knew us!
Yes, I will continue to read and enjoy LB's blog, but on our Bored he can be more Bored specific, creating delightful avatars (even though one of MY favorites, the serenade of Angel, was not on his countdown like it was on Sprots', I still get a huge kick out of all of 'em) that only we "insiders" would understand. He would have to adapt his material completely, to appeal to a wider audience. It would be sorta like some people feel about Elvis when he left Sun Records for RCA. With a new Bored, we can hang on to our boy a bit longer, before he inevitably becomes the next Charles Schultz (coming in 2015.."An Evil Squirrel Christmas"?).
We've been through many changes, but we shall not perish from this earth. I needs my bored promos, my Bored games, my ES drawings, my four-footer posts, my wits kept sharp by recognizing and stepping around political posts, the musings of Merry Men...all of the wack and circumstance that the denizens of the Bored have provided me with in the decade plus since I delurked and said howdy.
It's not over till we say it's over> In the immortal words of Senator Blutarsky, "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor"?
No, says I.
This would be even more awesome if you could hear the powerful inspirational music playing in my head as I type this. Imagine sort of a mix of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Flat Foot Floogie With a Floy Floy".

My thanks also to Dave and hopes we land somewhere soon. I've spent the better part of two days now trying to get this message to go through and I hate to see this happening. I'd be glad to send something to help defray the costs.

I just checked with my handsome son (everyone says he looks like me), since he's a web designer. He has volunteered to help in any way needed. He should be able to do whatever needs to be done, or just provide some tech support if the move is already underway. If you need him, please email me at: eddielawhorn at bellsouth dot net and I'll get you his contact information after work tonight.

Does he know PHP? Actually, what's required is familiarity with the phpBB system.mikehardware wrote:I just checked with my handsome son (everyone says he looks like me), since he's a web designer. My son works doing programming and everything for web sites, and had said the phpbb documentation looked straightforward when I asked him about it. If needed, just email and I'll give his contact info.

Dave--Continue to really appreciate you going the extra mile for us--and thanks to lb and Gor. If I knew one blessed thing about any of this I would help--I still will be glad to help defray any costs.tubadave wrote:EDIT: Feel free to disregard that 1/13/2013 date for now.....although the Bored is currently running very poorly, and posting is minimal, I won't take it down when a new home is in the works. I am in touch with LB and Eyegor on this, and will be assisting every step of the way. Once everything is up and running, I will step aside, continue to act as an admin, be a technical consultant....whatever is needed and appropriate. I'm still willing to do whatever I can, but the time is definitely right for me to pass this off, or at least to no longer be the only one with the keys to the kingdom, as it were.![]()
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In early October of 2007, I made a decision which I have never regretted, taking on the job of hosting the Bored. Five years and nearly three months later, it has become obvious to me that, for quite a while now, I have lacked the time and patience to effectively administer the Bored. It's been fun, but all good things must come to an end, as they say. It's time for someone new to step in and take over the reins.
Therefore, I have decided that I will be shutting down this iteration of the Bored on Sunday evening, 1/13/2013.
Presumably, one or more of the technically-minded among you will want to step in and take over. There are two ways to accomplish this:
1) Start a new Bored elsewhere.
2) Transfer all the existing files for this Bored elsewhere.
Obviously, #1 is much easier to accomplish, but in either case, I will redirect wwtbambored.com to point to the new location, and then transfer ownership of the domain as well.
Decide amongst yourselves who will be taking charge of this (let's not have 3+ Boreds to choose from again, heh) and get in touch with me ASAP, either via Facebook, or at tubadave@normalview.com. If necessary, lb13 can reach me by phone.
My availability will be a bit sketchy this weekend, but I will respond to any messages sent to me as soon as I can, and I should be easy enough to find during the upcoming week.
For the last 12 and a half years, but the last 5+ especially, I thank you all. I'll still pop in and say hello from time to time.

Thanks to everybody who's put so much effort and energy into finding a new home, especially Saucy, as I believe this is somewhat out of her usual vocation and avocations.a1mamacat wrote:Thanks for the last 5 Dave, I know it can't have been easy.
I have two suggestion.
We can make a private Facebook group, or utilize the old Yahoo group. Phoenix is still alive, I checked.

Re: All Good Things.... (Bored Transfer/Relocation Coming Soon)
I've still been dropping by when I can, but haven't been posting regularly. That's mostly because I really haven't had anything to say (as if that stops anyone around these parts), but in part it was due to the server issues. While I'll be sorry to see this incarnation depart, I'll be happy to donate to the costs of a new one. Facebook's privacy settings change too frequently to use them as a permanent replacement. At some point, they'd shift on us, the new settings would get screwed up and our craziness would get blasted to all our other friends. (That's not a slur on the intelligence of Trish or whoever is in charge of those settings. It's a slur on the probably deliberate ambiguity and complexity of Facebook's byzantine system.)
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

BTW, this morning's delay on posting and viewing has been relatively minimal. Ten seconds or so for both activities.

It's honestly been the best and longest lasting server window we've had in several months. Of course, I expect it to close at anytime, like that portal to the fifth dimension on The Twilight Zone....

Saucy says, re Facebook-hosted BoredArk she so wonderfully created:
Saucy, please take this as seriously put; we know you've put the right settings on that thing for privacy. The thing is, Facebook itself is no observer of it's own privacy settings. It's reset them several times on one-person accounts for no apparent reason; well, their reason is "we're rolling out this new format & we think the people at your job/religious institute/whatever need to see those bathing-suit pictures from 5 years ago your friend tagged you in in their account". Or worse.
No telling how it treats the privacy settings on groups whenever in reformats itself, but no reason to suppose it respects them any more than it does individual-account settings.

I think, no matter what, that your new group will continue to be used. Facebook has now gotten the message from its members, loud and clear, that they can't mess with privacy settings anymore. Have you noticed they recently added the padlock symbol to their toolbar? You can view and modify your privacy settings from that.ghostjmf wrote:Saucy says, re Facebook-hosted BoredArk she so wonderfully created:

And just to re-reclarify, I don't believe Facebook screws up the way it frequently does for malicious reasons; it is just not a very well-run entity. Computer code is very literal stuff, & the Facebook zillionaires do not have the right programmers locked in their back room making sure that the new incarnations of Facebook are consistent with their subscribers' wishes.

I don't believe that. It's design, not programming. They test things very well before releasing them.ghostjmf wrote:And just to re-reclarify, I don't believe Facebook screws up the way it frequently does for malicious reasons; it is just not a very well-run entity.
