Rugs and vases are gender specific?? Who knew?
Mentioning ethnicity as merely descriptive is no more offensive than mentioning gender. I unfailingly fail to understand why you always take exception to someone mentioning "oriental" in a descriptive phrase.
Now if I could just find myself a Vermont woman, I could start building houses....

I've been looking off and on the past couple days for the inspiration to the avatar that was up when I got back, and now that I've found, I don't get it either. It will not win.

Sometime today or tomorrow, ES Avatar Anthology Part XVII will be up which may assist you in figuring things out.... as well as let you see what wonderful ES eye candy you missed while the two of you enjoyed the 49th state....

I didn't get it until I saw lb's response, but then I immediately knew that the character on the left had to be christie1111. It probably won't win, but it's pretty clever.

You are close.... it's actually Hottie on the left, who may or may not still live in the same town as christie, though as you know, it's not the town that's important....

Ha! When I went to the archives to confirm my hunch, the first thing I found was #221, "Bad Hair Hottie",

with the caption, "
Christie ran into Hottie (they live in the same town) at the post office..." Unfortunately I never made it past the first word.

In Pam's home in Hawai'i the term "Oriental" has generally been replaced by "Ornamental". A little inside joke I suppose. I guess that makes the supposed ethnic slur more acceptable somehow. But now I catch myself using it occasionally around people who have no idea what I am talking about.
Of course they also regularly use the term "Pake" to refer ot themselves and others, sometimes in a joking manner and sometimes in a fairly derogatory manner. Go figure. "Pake" is a mostly Hawai'ian term to refer to Chinese Hawai'ians and is generally regarded as an an ethnic slur. There are similar terms for Hawai'ians of other races or mixed race which is what many Hawaiians are these days. Pakes, pochos, kanakas, yobos, hapas, kepanis, katonks, popolos. So many in fact that I can't keep up with all those delightful ethnic slurs flying around the islands!
Pake also implies someone who is excessively frugal (a cheap ass tightwad might be more accurate!) because many view those Hawai'ians of Chinese ancestry as being that way.
I can attest to at least one family that fits the description and is proud of it!
Of course the locals use "Haole" as an ethnic slur of sorts depending on how it is used to describe us pasty white boys who stole the Islands from them. Even though nowadays most of "them" weren't native to the islands to begin with...
I think it orginally meant a foreigner in general. Personally, I like to take credit for stealing the islands.

Doesn't there have to be some degree of intent for a slur to be a slur? Yeah, yeah.......I know there are couple of universal biggies, but if you don't fall under the umbrella that some on the board here do of "knowing everything about everything," wouldn't the intent mitigate the perceived slur. For example, per George Carlin, the word fuck is the most useful and versatile word in the English and many other languages because it's also universally understood.

They are certainly not always said with intent to be a slur. But when it is it is pretty obvious!

My point precisely. McCraig's "oriental" reference was by no means an intended slur, but yet he was called on the carpet for it.................guess it was an "ornamental" carpet.
