And, of course, for hurricanes, it's the WeatherUnderground, wunderground, whatever it's called. The blog has crazy people like here, but occasionally there are real time posts that are ahead of the national networks and local networks. And dropsonde readings and cool shit like that!

HA!!! I had thought of the word dropsonde this morning for the first time since I was in college! My Dad was making comments on the wind in the upper atmosphere making the clouds look funky on teh way home from lunch, and it was one of the term that popped into my head while I was trying to think of what those graphs of upper air data were to be called.....

That is freaky......

The next thing you know is the reporters go to a map with the states randomized and the reporters pick a location to uncover the report. The reporters get to skip 2 reports whenever they feel like it. If the report is correct, they get to go to that city for a vacation.

WGN is the best weather report. Tom Skilling is the greatest.

We once had a serious discussion in one of my weather classes about how much Tom Skilling must get paid. He had to be at the time the foremost real TV meteorologist in the country.

I can't believe he's still working up there. As my Dad would say, he has to be propped up.....

Tom Skilling's salary has never been talked about in the papers in Chicago. I am sure he makes in the millions, but he is known for accurate forecasts that rival any other weather caster. It is clearly evident he was hired for his ability, not his good looks. Dallas' forecasts are abysmal. Tom needs to help them out after he visits cheeseland.

The focus right now seems to be on Portage, which is 90 miles downstream from here (and about 30 miles north of Madison, although the Wisconsin River turns west near Portage and passes nowhere near Mad City).

Things are coming back to normal up here. All of the roads in the area that were closed have been inspected and reopened, although they might need some minimal maintenance. There were quite a few homes flooded, and one business (a tavern right along the river) had floodwaters up to the doorknob - but it could have been a lot worse. Whoever is in charge of such things said that this was just short of a "50-year flood". Nothing on the news about the situation my friend had mentioned at the local paper mill, so they apparently dodged a bullet there.

Luckily, it is supposed to be sunny and dry this week. We will definitely need the respite. Our area had been considered as having been under drought conditions over the past several years. This year seems to be making up for it all at once, though. We have received a normal year's worth of precipitation in the past three months, and the ground (along with the reservoirs) can not handle anything more at this point.

Overall, I think our area was very, very close to things having turned out much worse. But, like I said earlier, our home was in no danger whatsoever, as we live on top of a hill about a mile from the river...you count your blessings where you can.

Portage made the local news here in Dallas. The flooding looked terrible. Glad to hear you are OK and not having to do the backstroke.

Heck, it could darn near be snow if it were here right now.....

Thursday I had the AC on. I contemplated firing up the furnace yesterday....

We did the flip from 70's to 90's, then back to 70's again already this month, but the humidity is DisneyWorldEsque so it's still hot. If I had already had my yard seeded all the seed would have washed down into the marsh, though. When I went to bring an umbrella to Rain Man at the bus stop yesterday afternoon, those little froggie things were going NANGNANGNANGNANGNANG like the Klimpaloon....
