Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

North Platte. Sorry, I didn't accept Platte.

I've worked for the same nonprofit for the past 18 1/2 years. Even for a nonprofit, they don't pay very well (though it's much better now than it used to be, both for me because I have seniority and for everybody else) - my starting salary was between $12,000 and $13,000. One of the major perks, though, is the shared, heavily subsidized, staff vacation in Aspen every December. We have a week of training in Denver and then head to Aspen for another week. For most of the 90s, being in Chicago, making very little money and managing it poorly, a bunch of people would carpool instead of flying. You can get to Denver in one very grueling day, and my roommate's parents lived in Des Moines, so we could get back from Aspen without having to spring for a hotel room.

Anyway, there was something about the Nebraska stretch of the drive that was just AWFUL. It was interminable, and boring, and there were always too many people in the car and we were all testy.
