No one's apologizing to Ellen- just saying her comment doesn't mean she has to leave the Bored.
I read bigpapi's and frogman's posts to have an apologetic tone, one that I think is unnecessary. That's all.
In retrospect, I suppose you could chide Ellen a bit for making a DQ exit post, but other than that, most people were simply saying, "You said something kinda dumb, but don't leave over it". Nothing more than that.

Thanks Jeemie for your support. Sheesh - I thought I was too sensitive. My whole point came from watching Gordon and seeing the game played to its best. It was truly wonderful and a very rare occurence.

Of course, my skin is pretty thick, but still.

Getting on a game show is a dream for a lot of people. Most who post on this board. When selected you'd expect the players to bone up on the game play. It is obvious so many on the daily "millionaire" show just show up. I'll agree that a lot of the contestants' game play is pathetic. Not saying they are pathetic people, but yes, they were pathetic contestants, that day.

And if a simple "uh, I am one of the pathetic contestants." is all it took to run someone off, well, they are pathetic internet posters. At least for the day they decided to run away.

I do have a problem with this statement. Just a few questions. Have you been on the show? Have you been on the show since the latest changes (no phone a friend, questionable "experts," etc.)? Do you know anything about how I prepared, or how anyone else prepared? Unless you can answer these questions, you have no business calling any contestant pathetic.

I don't thing one has to have been on the show to recognize a pathetic contestant.

I think at least half of them are below average. I don't think anyone said you were one of them.

You may need to explain your story to bigpapi, IHS9, if you want him to understand your humor.

Or to understand MM, in general.

Isn't by definition about half of them "below average?"

Anyway, I think Kevin had a very tough question and I am glad I didn''t have his stack with the new rules. Fortunately, my WWOQ didn't come until the $50k. Kevin played well and should be proud of his play plus he had the guts to go for it. I may be wrong, but I don't think anyone is questioning his play here.

Unless all the contestants come from Lake Wobegon.

I was going to explain the Lake Wobegon reference and some math, but nevermind, someone else did half of that.

I'm not sure if former contestants are qualified to judge whether other contestants are pathetic or not. Each contestant faces not only their own unique stack of questions but also their own set of game day/play circumstances. I don't want to be an apologist here for llamas or others who missed questions "that everyone else knew".
I don't have time to track down the walhal saga but I think everyone would benefit from his experience in the hotseat. I think everyone needs to realize that this is an open message board and that posters are free to express their opinions. I know that I have been criticized for my gameplay but I hav e a thick skin.

Of course, there are. Again, I don't think anyone is referencing you at all. As a trivia player, the pathetic contestants are not "below average", they are the ones that have me screaming at the TV in amazement that they ever passed the test. I then remind myself how easy it is to cheat at those mass tests. I saw it happening myself.

So you know every answer? I mean, every single answer? All of them, all the time?? That is just absolutely amazing, I'm impressed!!! Is it just on WWTBAM, or do you know all of the answers on every show? I'm so intrigued!

Okay, now imagine a world, one where you do not know everything, and are not better than everyone else. Okay, ready?

In that world, just imagine that even though you know a lot about a lot of things, one of the things that you don't know about somehow made its way into the stack of questions that has been assigned to you when you're on a game show. Then...gasp...you get a question you don't know. Or maybe you do know it, but since you aren't used to being on tv, the pressure of the lights, and the cameras, and the crowd, and all that is at stake in the game throws you off your perfect A-game for just 20 seconds. And you get a question wrong. Now do you think you should be crucified for that?? Do you think people should say you cheated on a test to get there? Or that you're pathetic? Really??

Several years ago, they had a first tier (maybe $100) question about how many wheels a wheelbarrow had. No problem, two! Hey, what do you mean it's one? My dad's wheelbarrow had two!

So I would have llamaed and everybody could have talked about what a dumbass I was and how I must have cheated on the test and they would never know (or even care) that I'm a genius and know more sorts of crazy ass shit than were ever dreamt of in their philosophies.

Sic transit gloria mundi.....

PS I am speaking only to the remarks quoted above, not the entire thread.

I was wondering about how the word pathetic has aroused so much angst on the Bored. So I looked it up. I guess we are using the contempt and pity one and not just the pity one.

Maybe we should reread everything using the first definition and then we would all be sympathetic and not contemptous.

:)

Definitions of pathetic on the Web:

hapless: deserving or inciting pity; "a hapless victim"; "miserable victims of war"; "the shabby room struck her as extraordinarily pathetic ...
inspiring mixed contempt and pity; "their efforts were pathetic"; "pitiable lack of character"; "pitiful exhibition of cowardice"
inspiring scornful pity; "how silly an ardent and unsuccessful wooer can be especially if he is getting on in years"- Dashiell Hammett
wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

Arousing pity, sympathy, or compassion; Arousing scornful pity or contempt, often due to miserable inadequacy
en.wiktionary.org/wiki/pathetic

pathetically - in a manner arousing sympathy and compassion; "the sick child cried pathetically"
pathetically - arousing scornful pity; "they had pathetically little money"; "it was pathetically bad"
wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

Your powers of logic leave a lot to be desired. There is a lot of room on the continuum between knowing every answer and being pathetic. It would also take more than one wrong answer to be pathetic.

I would invite you to imagine a world where your wild inferences are pathetically wrong, but I don't think you could.

Probably best if you stick with numbers.

What edition of WWTBAM are you watching, where contestants have an opportunity to answer more than one question incorrectly?
